Local Water Reports

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Water

Post by john1967 » Thu Mar 20, 2008 10:18 am

Hi
When I brew I get the water from work, 8 miles away, the water where I live, Wombwell, South Yorkshire is crap, my father says it's from bore holes!!
It never seems to mash properly on light ales, O.K on darker types, could this be true or my mash technique?

Not sure how useful this is but the table formatting on the website is more user friendly

SEVERN TRENT - Water Supply Zone ZNT17 : Ruddington Keyworth & Gotham

Please refer to the key located beneath the table for an explanation of the units used to measure your water quality

Source of Water
The supply to this area is from surface water treated at works in Nottinghamshire
Water Quality
Depending on its origin, water can contain a variety of natural mineral salts. All water in supply is carefully purified at modern treatment plants to ensure that potential contaminants are removed in order to meet strict UK and European standards.
Quality Control
Each year we take many thousands of samples direct from the customers' taps to ensure its quality. The table below shows typical values for your area. Individual results may vary slightly due to natural changes in the raw water, and also to changes which occur within the domestic plumbing system.

Analysis Typical Value UK/European Limit Units
Hardness Level Hard No Standard Applies
Hardness Clark 15.61 No Standard Applies Degrees Clark
Hardness 89 No Standard Applies mgCa/l
Aluminium 8.33 200 μgAl/l

Plumbing Metals
Copper 0.02 2.0 mgCu/l
Lead 2.08 25 μgPb/l
Nickel 2.28 20 μgNi/l
Key

mg/l
is equivalent to one part per million.
μg/l
is equivalent to one part per billion.
Dilution number
is a standard method for detecting taste and odour. It is unlikely that anyone would be able to detect these below a level of 3.
Hazen
is a reference method for assessing the clarity of the water.
μS/cm
measures the natural mineral composition.
Hardness Level
the three measures shown are the most common used by washing machine manufactures.
Less than
means that this is the lowest value that the high quality equipment can measure.
Typical Results
for most analyses are based on the average level during the last 12 months. The remainder indicate the normal levels expected in your area.

This is the total Alkalinity for Yorkshire Water covering the Settle/Skipton Barnoldswick area.

With reference to: G425286-1

Good afternoon Mr Harrison

Thank you for your recent email regarding Total Alkalinity.

Average Alkalinity for the past 12 months is 12.43 mg/l CaCO3 (ranging from <10.73 to 14.84. This figure is based on a limited number of samples taken at our water treatment works as it is not a regulatory requirement for Yorkshire Water to monitor it.

Thames Water dont do 'total alkalinity' in their water reports and refused to supply a figure after I emailed them

http://www.thameswater.co.uk/water-qual ... rixton.pdf

However using one of Chris' test kits :boff: I've managed to come up with 225 mg/l CaCo3 as a figure for the Brixton area (Thames Water supply zone SLW26 Brixton - Zone number: 0118 - apparently there are 39,517 of you out there to whom this might be useful !)

Thanks for the kit Chris and a Happy New Year to you all.

Thought I'd post up for West Oxfordshire area (I'm in Carterton & Witney, zone 283).

Alkalinity (for the last 3 brews) I measured using Chris' CRS/Methyl Orange method :) as: 184, 197 and 207mg/l CaCO3

The following are values from the Thames Water report, 2007 averages. Take with appropriate pinch of salt..:

Total Hardness: 258mg/l CaCO3
SO4: 74.7mg/l
Na+: 18.5mg/l
Cl-: 32.9mg/l

The only Mg ion concentration I have was a 2006 reading that I got after emailing them - this was 6mg/l at the time. No Calcium ion readings - I just plug them into Graham's water calculator and let it get on with it.

Just got a reply from Yorkshire water about the Selby area and they say the average alkalinity in caco3 over the last 12 months is 193.7 mg/l which has been as high as 211.0 and as low as 183.7.

The rest of the information required was available from the website.
