Coopers Stout Virgin (This will be my 1st time)

Post by DC » Sat Feb 07, 2009 4:26 pm

Hi all, I am about to embark on my 1st ever Coopers Stout kit after a visit to the http://www.elderberrywineandbeer.com/ homebrew shop in Whitley Bay near Newcastle. I purchased 2 Coopers Stout Kits & 2 kg's of medium spray malt and a refill for my Hambleton bard S20 co2 cylinder, I was only going to buy one kit but then thought I would get 2 and save myself having to drive down in a week or so to buy another kit etc.

Okay ! Back to the subject of making the Coopers Stout kit, this will be my 1st attempt at this kit (hence the virgin) in the post title, I have made a Coopers Lager kit previously and it went a bit mad and I had foam escaping from the FV. Just wondered if I should maybe not fill the FV up to the full 5 gallon mark straight off and wait a few days for the initial fermentation to slow a bit 1st and then top up the FV?

I bought these 2 kits after reading rave reviews on this forum, mainly by Ditch =D> on how good Coopers Stout kits are, so I am going to start one kit off later on tonight and see what it comes out like.

Any help or advice regarding brewing Coopers Stout kits will be greatly received.

Cheers DC

Just do it as it says on the tin and leave it long enough to condition. The longer you leave it the better it'll taste and Cooper's are consistently good, lower price range kits. IMHO they punch well above their weight.

yep to all the above especially about the comment punching above their weight. if you can its well worth conditioning it for a couple of months. another piece of advice - be prepared to clean the yeast head before the other half comes home, it'll only become another arguing point!

Hi lads, Thanks for the quick replies, I have made it as it said on the tin apart from swapping the 1kg of sugar for 1kg of medium spray malt. I have made it in a 5.5 gallon FV so hopefully there will be enough room to contain the froth that is too come  If it tastes and smells as good as it did when making this kit it will be a good one ! I will post back with the results when its brewed.

Cheers DC

virgin? virgin on the stout-alicious :D very nice wee drop my friend ,very tre bonn!!!
polished mine off in about under 2 weeks ! :=P
good job you bought 2 cans or is that toucans ...no ..sorry.
get your first one in the keg, brew the 2nd straight away then as you drink the first batch over the next few weeks??? will give second batch a bit longer to mature.
but if it tastes this good after about 4 days in keg god knows what its like after a month or dare i say, it two  i purchased a larger fv but i reckon all you need to do is make sure there is plenty of an escape route for the co2 build up. ie: crack the lid open a bit and not rely on the bubbler to let enough pressure out.

FILL YER BOOTS MAN!!

Embalmer, you know you are talking madness, the only way to leave Coopers Stout for two months would be to have loads of kegs and do a brew every week until you had more than you can drink! Come to think of it tahts not a bad idea...

Kegged my Coopers IPA today, hoping that will be just as quick!

I'd back PMH up on this one, I brewed a coopers IPA before I decided to brew from scratch and it was by far the best kit I brewed

Hi all.
As with DC I am soon to lose my Coopers Stout virginity. I’m off to my store to order one up (they only have a small HB selection here on the Isle of Wight)
I’ve done several Coopers kits so far and you cannot really go wrong with them. The IPA is drinkable after only a week out of my warming cupboard. Gawd knows what it will be like after a month or so.
The Australian Lager clears in 3 – 4 days after bottling and tastes good after a couple of weeks. The sediment is well compacted and the whole bottle can be p-poured into the glass without fear of a cloudy pint. By the way I do not work for Coopers and I’m not Australian.
I plan to bottle the Coopers stout as my keg will soon be filled with IPA. Has anyone tried bottled Stout and if so does it condition better than the kegged variety. Advise on brewing and priming sugars would be a big help. Thanks to all in advance.

Oh gawd.
Have just read forward after posting.
I can already hear Ditch's moans of "just do as it sez on the tin and use spraymalt instead of sugar".
To bottle or keg ------- now thats the question?

Dont you worry, I reckon our Ditch is open to a little experimentation, how else would he have bought the Coopers Dark Ale otherwise?
(he'll be along now to say "ye fecker, its eau naturel all the way" =D>
