Been researching this lately, I wanted to make a Kronenberg 1664 Blonde clone, but I figure they are similar. As far as kits go, I'v come up with a recipe modified from here. Works out at over £30, and no guarantees it will taste anything like Hoegaarden

Black Rock Whispering Wheat
1kg Dry Wheat Malt Extract
15g Crushed Corriander Seeds
2tbs Auracao Orange Peel
WYeast Belgian Wit Yeast 3944

You could sacrifise the yeast (and use orange zest) but I'v not heard many success stories from those that didn't use it. Think I'm gonna wait till I can produce something from an AG setup, but there seems to be a promising extract recipe here, if you fancy giving it a go.

Let me know how you get along!

Drinking - Young's Harvest Bitter
Conditioning - Coopers Australian Lager

Brupaks do a Belgian Wit in their Beers of the World range. iirc it was quite good for a kit wit :D .

I'm sure someone posted a recipe on here a few months ago for a hoegaarden clone, based on a basic wheat beer kit - just had a quick look for it but can't find it. I'm sure someone else will point you in the right direction. Vaguely remember you take a normal wheat beer kit and add orange peel, coriander seeds and lots of other bits and bobs, brew it up for a while and robert's your mothers brother. I did mean to bookmark it but haven't wouldn't mind giving it a go myself at some point.

Aha. I had missed this one. Apparently it contains the coriander seeds and curacao orange peel too, will have to give this a go!

I kind of went for a "hoegarden type "using a coopers wheat kit. I added the curacao and coriander and the rest of it and its turned out to be the best kit I`ve done so far. Its the only kit that nobody would asociate with home brew as far as friends reaction goes. No way is it anything like the real thing though, it might be better in my opinion but it won`t taste like hoegarden.

Yep, I too did that Hoegaarden recipe that was posted here.

Anyway, it didn't really taste like Hoegaarden to be honest, but it was absolutely superb.

Have had a go at a Hoegaarden recipe, posted on this site, 4 times in the past 9 months. all have been superb and each one getting better as the recipe is 'adjusted'.

The original called for :

1.3 Kg Wheat Spray Malt
1x 1.7Kg Wheat beer kit - I used the Brewferm variety
1/2oz Kent Goldings Hops
1/2oz Saaz Hops
1/2tsp Corriander Seeds
1/2 Bitter Orange Peel (Curacao)

I brewed as per instructions and conditioned in a Cornelius Keg

This turned out fine as a lager but quite thin and not very Hoegaardeny.

Subsequent attempts have been fairly similar but with a lot more 'flavourings - corriander, orange.

My latest attempt (kegged last Sunday) Was:

1.5Kg Wheat Spray Malt
1x Brewferm Wheat Beer Kit
40gms Kent Goldings Hops - Boiled for 30mins
30gms Saaz Hops - Boiled for 15mins
11gms Corriander seeds
50gms Bitter Orange Peel
50gms VERY Fresh Chopped Ginger (the magic ingredient for me I think)
1/4tsp Fermaid K

I think the secret really is to leave it in the keg for as long as possible - 4 months minimum, 6 better. Quite a long time to tie up a keg but the difference in flavour between 1 month and 4 is staggering.

In all but one recipe I used White Labs WLP300 yeast, which is amazing in that it always climbs out of the FV and spills all over the work tops so put the FV in a tray of some sort. One time I used a bottle of WLP400 but the flavour of the finished brew was more like a strongly flavoured Leffe and tasted a bit like 'rubber' - would not use again.

If you would like a full rundown of the method just email me.

Have a go it is well worth it and like me you will probably have one 'on the go' all the time.

Eric.

Can't help with a kit recipe, but all grain this is actually a pretty easy beer to copy, and the one i've had most success trying to brew an exact 'clone'. Mine have tasted spot on after only a couple of weeks in the keg.

Hi mysterio - would you mind posting your all grain recipe please?

Thanks, Gaz.
