Post by craigjoneswales » Fri Feb 13, 2009 12:25 pm

Hi guys

Received beer making kit for Crimbo so im new to this, but learning quickly

Get all my gear from Wilkinsons. Seems cheap there for brewing stuff compared to online shops etc.

have successfully made a youngs bitter

Currently have a youngs cider priming

now im after some of the black stuff

Is there a kit out there similar to Guinness

has anybody here brewed the EDME Irish Stout.

i found Muntons Imperial Stout and Brupaks Black Moor Stout both were similar original Guinness, not the widget stuff or the extra cold gear.

Cue Ditch with his anti Guinness rants :=P

May I suggest if you like a dark brew, to give Coopers Dark Ale a go? My favourite ever kit brew so far, and others agree =D>

I was always a Guinness fan until I brewed a coopers stout. The flavours are more complex and interesting than Guinness and I would choose Coopers over Guinness. Having said that, (and without wanting to send Ditch into a frenzy =P~ ) if you like guinness then you'll love coopers stout. Have a read of the coopers tips thread.

John Bulls Master class Irish Stout if you can track it down.

the john bull masterclass irish stout is really good, i've got what remains of that in a barrel behind me now though even better is the muntons imperial stout which i had a sneaky taste of even though it needs a bit longer to clear and already it is better than the great majority of commercial stouts i've drunk.

The nearest kit to Guinness I've made is Muntons Connoisseurs Export Stout which had similar characteristics to the bottle-conditioned Guinness that disappeared from the UK about fifteen years ago. I recently brewed some Edme Superbrew Irish Stout which was very enjoyable but unlike anything I have tasted in Ireland. It had much more flavour and body than Guinness, Beamish or Murphys.

As B.all said, the John Bull Masterclass Irish Stout is excellent, i think its close to the Guinness Foreign Extra.
Although the Coopers stout is also excellent :)

Craig; Try a Coopers Stout kit.

Find out why I consider Guinness to be " Dish Water " by comparison.

After testing a couple of pints of Guinness last night, I'd have to agree that Coopers Stout (even though mine is still young and needs maturation) has a much more complex flavour and could in a few weeks be even better.... if I have any left ;)
