Taking SG

How are you supposed to take an SG when you have just mixed all the ingredients of your kit. Mine is always frothy as hell after mixing. Am I supposed to wait an hour or so for it to settle before trying :?: :? :?

You could fill a sample jar if its all frothed up after aeration :)

That's what I do. I found that by fitting a tap to the bottom of my FV it made it very easy and less messy to take a SG reading from my wort at any stage of primary fermentation.

Unfortunately don't have a tap on my FV, will fit one eventually. I find after I have mixed the kit it is pretty well aereated anyway. I suppose I should fill the trial jar and leave it to stand for a while. I guess it's a good idea to fit a tap as it saves on possible contamination from the trial jar and your hands   Although I do try to sterilise both and haven't had a problem yet.......

I just sanitise a small glass with the rest of the stuff, then after you mix the wort, push froth aside with yer spoon ,take a scoop of brew and stick it in yer test jar.I always dispose of sample to avoid contamination .

I just let it settle a bit then use the paddle to clear some bubbles so I can take a reading. I also must aquire a tap for my fv ^^
