Toasted Oatmeal Stout - 33L - 1.046 - 13.02.09

I loved the original oatmeal stout I made a few months ago so I thought I would brew it again. This time toasting the oats first.

33L batch and filled a small demijohn for an experiment with other yeast (Coopers Ale yeast from an old kit).

That looks like a nice smooth brewday.....and I can almost smell it from here.

I bet that's going to be a cracker.

I need to get another stout on the go. I've drunk all my Guinness Clone and am already firing into the 31/2 Shades of Stout.

I put a post up to say that I was looking for my first AG HB and wanted to do a dark beer but also something that was easy to start with. I am also trawling through the old recipe post to also see if there is anything there that takes my fancy.

I must admit I seem to have a tendency to enjoy eating things with oats in and as I love my stouts and dark beers this recipe look very interesting. It seems a simple recipe as it only has one variety of hops and a standard yeast. But I do have a couple of questions.

1. Does the 60min on the recipe mean boil in the wort for 60 min?
2. Is the 1.046 the OG of the wort prior to fermentation? If so I should expect a beer between 4-5% right?
3. As I am looking to do a 25L batch, this is all I have room for should I reduce everything by a factor 25% or do I reduce only some things and not others.

Another question has now popped up. Toasted Oats? Normal rolled or flaked oats then toasted under the grill in a hot oven?

Can I use Malted oats instead as I can find these, Though not crushed... :?

Any help on how I make toasted oats?

Hi Tequilla6,

I used flaked oats on my last oatmeal stout spread over a baking tray and toasted for 45min at gas mark 5 in the oven turning every 10 min or so, but I'm sure it'll taste good whatever type you use.

I used quaker oats spread on a baking tray, baked until they smelled good and were starting to brown, then mashed along with the rest of the grains, easy.

Ok, That easy eh?

I hear toasted flakes and it sound so complicated, but roasted Oat Flakes in the oven sounds within my skill set

BTW I can tell you that this is a great beer! ;)

and yes the 1.046 was the starting gravity before I pitched the yeast.
