Hi
Re: Hi
hi i just finished my first brew of wherry i didnt get that to drop below standing gravity of 1016 but after 2 weeks of conditioning tastes as good as most other bottled bitters from shops, but if you ever run into the same problem of sticking that high look around on the forum and you'll see that there are lots of tips to get it started again
Re: Hi
Hello Greeny .I posted about my wherry finishing at 1.018 the other day.I didn,t bother trying to get it lower ,just bottled it and it came out great.Only annoying thing is the box says it will make a beer of approx 4.5 abv and my beer was probably more like 3.5 abv [I didn,t take og reading
but I guess it started about 1.045.There has been much debate about this subject .Even if the fg came down to 1.014 as stated on the box ,it would still not give an abv of anything like 4.5 .Most kits dont give an approx abv so why do they on the Woodfordes kits when they can not be achieved
Lets all march on Muntons waving pitch forks and burning brands and demand satisfaction.

Re: Hi
If your kit beer ever stops at too high a gravity, sterilise a large plastic spoon/paddle and gently stir the yeast cake (at the bottom of the fv) back into suspension. This should drop it by a few points. Failing that, especially if it's stuck at a very high gravity, try pitching some dry beer enzyme. It will ferment the residual sugars resulting in a thinner tasting beer (but will be stronger) but it will get the beer to ferment a little lower.
Leave it for around 10 days (in total) to allow the yeast to clean up any residual tastes produced during fermentation then rack it to secondary/bottle or keg it.

Re: Hi
I agree with Steve. I did a Youngs Harvest Mild back in October where the target FG was somewhere between 1000 and 1006 according to the tin. Mine stuck at 1007, so bearing in mind it was only the 2nd brew I've ever done, I looked on here, saw the advice about giving it a gentle stir and it dropped another 3 points in 4 days. I found it took a little longer to condition and generally settle down in the keg, but about 4 weeks later I was drinking a top pint which, 6 other kits later, is still the best I've produced in my short brewing career thus far.
So give it a stir and it should drop a few more points, but (here's the hard bit) don't drink it too soon as it might still taste a bit "cidery" and disappointing.
Good luck mate.

Re: Hi
I second all that good advice about rousing and beer enzyme.
I had the "Wherry Experience" with my last brew,i.e. stuck at 1018. Roused and added nutrient and I bottled at 1014. It turned out great, if a bit weaker than advertised, but it's all gone now
Bearing this in mind, I bought a sachet of Safale 04 yeast when I got my Woodfordes Nelsons Revenge kit. 4 days in the FV and it has dropped from 1046 down to 1012 and is still bubbling (just). This beer should just about reach the advertised 5% on the kit packaging
.
There is a long thread somewhere on the forum about this very issue (sticking Woodfordes kits), but in my recent experience it may be worth using a different yeast to that supplied with the Woodfordes kit.
