Being cash rich at the mo have ordered a small supply of kits against leaner times and the availability of empty kegs/bottles.

What's the best way of storing tinned kits; cool and dark?

Mortgage is fixed at 5.25% (it's a b@stard, I banked on rates going up, rather than this artificial fighting of a recession that's going to happen anyway. Still, being fixed at least I know where the goalpost is) for another 36 months and, at buying 18 months ago, was only 35% of the property value.

Should be alright there but may well invest in a pushbike for commuting... If things get real bad I'll sell no.2 child.

Ah, there's the rub; with SWMBO not working I don't really have the facility to make much of a regular impact on the mortgage (although any one off, lump sum would help).

It's a straight repayment with a 5 year fix but there are also penalties for early settlement. So, with the fact the mortgage will shrink regardless, the money I've spent on kits will reduce my "beer-burden" over the next 6 months - perhaps I will keep offspring no.2; you never know, maybe she'll learn how to pour a decent pint!

I've got a lot on around here and could do with someone to help out with the donkey work ~ and the horse, Dogs and magpies too, come to that! If she's good at getting up early, she could have it all done before I'm up and then just amuse herself for the rest of the day, look. That way, I'd have pretty much All my time to do as I pleased! ..... Hey; That doesn't sound such a bad deal!

That's a good offer. Ebay have changed the rules on selling kids so it's not as easy to offload them as it used to be.
I reckon Ditch would be a fair slavedriver, erm, I mean, "guardian"....

As it happens, ye know; It wasn't that long ago at all that people genuinely Did 'sell' their kids. I don't mean in any sinister way. They were 'sold into service'. My Great Aunt was. In fact, quite a few of my ancestors were In Service as 'Domestics'. It's quite eye opening too to get a clue as to the level of people who were able to have them. Far from just the 'Upper Classes'. It seems to me that ye only had to have a bit of 'disposable' and ye might well decide to spend it on a kiddie or two, to act as ye general Maid / Servant.

Some of the youngsters I've seen, on the census returns and such, have been as young as twelve to thirteen and could even be living in the house they served, in the same street as their parents lived! That in itself surely gives ye a clue? Basically, I s'pose, there being no 'family planning' to speak of, people just bred like rats and wound up with more kids than they knew what to do with or how to even feed.

Thus, Mr and Mrs. Smith and the Jones' both lived in Prospect Rd. Both the men worked as Stokers at the gas works. But the Jones', for what ever reason, had just a kid or two, while the Smith's had eight or more. Result? The Jones' would take on one of the Smith kiddies for a home help.

What percentage all of this actually broke down into a bit of 'neighbourly helping out', or what ever, I don't know. Never gone that deeply into the sociological aspects of it. Probably better than the work house though. Had a rellie or two born and died there too.

Anyway; WTF's all this got to do with bloody beer kits?!

SWMBO has vetoed the selling of either Junior Foreman or Chief Taster Apprently she's grown quite fond of them.

On the up she has said that ongoing parenthood should give me plenty of reason to drink and therefore to homebrew...

Back onto topic, I was filling my shopping cart online the other day and got past £65 and spotted the Free Postage...
