could anyone tell me roughly how much golden syrup i should add to a lager kit to get around 4% out of it? maybe a mix of syrup and some dme?

If the kit is designed to make a 4% lager then just substitute the sugar for the same weight of golden syrup (probably 1kg). Can't help you with the DME - I never use it.

thanks for that. actually just after writing this post i was reading a thread on your adapted kit in which you added golden syrup. so basically it is just a replacement for sugar to add a little something different. thanks again

Chris-x1 wrote:With syrup being a liquid sugar you will require more than 1 kg to account for the water. Without any specific figures for golden syrup (I only have glucose syrup) i'd use 25% more.

If you can provide the weight of the extract in the tin and the approximate proportions of sugar(golden syrup):dme you want to use it will be possible to give you a more accurate suggestion.
well i was thinking about a coopers kit. maybe the lager, pilsner or mexican cerveza so it would be a 1.7kg kit. i would like some body there so i was thinking about maybe doing 500g light dme and 250g syrup but if your saying account for the water then maybe 500 dme and 300-350 syrup.how does that sound? like i previously said i would like it around 4%.

also i was thinking about making this kit up and then before adding the yeast syphoning off about 4 litres into a dj and adding some strawberry syrup (like the stuff you put on ice cream. it has no preservatives in it) to it to try and make some kind of fruli.any thoughts or tips on that?any idea what sort of quantity of strawberry syrup to add for flavour? i realise this will also up the abv of this small batch but thats fine.

1 kg of Golden Syrup added to a lager kit gives the correct OG. Maybe the syrup is more concentrated?

ok,cheers.think i can make sense of that. one more question though if you dont mind. do you know why in kit instructions they tell you to add so much sugar for priming. the coopers kit i just did sugested something silly like 180g. i went with 85g as that is what most people on here seem to do and that was fine for an ale however i do want my lager much fizzier than that but dont want bottle bombs!! what do you think would make my brew nice and fizzy but not dangerous? i was thinking around 100g or maybe a little more.thanks again for the previous help mate.

well that makes me feel a little better if i was to go ahead with priming with a bit more sugar then.just not so sure about the part where you say "yet"!!haha

do you think 100g in a 20 lire batch is still safe for glass bottles?

I put in a fair amount of sugar for my lager, about 8g per litre. so in most of my kits ive had it at about 180g of priming sugar. Its all turned out great.

with dave on this one.
but i like fizzy lager.

the edme that i cocked up was brewed on 6th jan at sg 1040 and bottled on 14th at 1012. at a rate of 6g of sugar per pint, and
its not bad. about 4ish percent abv [but thinking about it, its probably more like 5 with the extra sugar]
nice and fizzy with a good half inch head that stays.
doesnt taste much like lager you get in the pub but its definitely drinkable.

and..no bombs but i wonder if thats `cos there only half pint bottles.

cheers for that, the kits seem to suggest 8g per litre so think i might go with 6g. thanks again
