New King Keg nearly exploaded

Post by craigmtc » Thu Feb 26, 2009 7:20 pm

Can't believe it, a King Keg I bought three weeks nearly exploaded and is now out of shape, and rounded on the bottom.

I have a Woodfords Wherry which was flat after secondary. It turn's out the tap needed tightning, which I did. I then added the gas, and Keg went of shape "round at the bottom". I did listed and feel to see if the pressure valve was releaseing gad in betrween each squirt, of which I did around three.

Has anybody heard of this happening with King Keg's, and chance I will get a replacement?

Cheers

Craig

I think about three for about two seconds each. Which may well be too much (well obviusly was) but the release valve did not release any gas.

The now seems to have more or less got back to normal, but dare I use it again.

Sounds like your pressure relief valve is faulty.

What kind of gas injection system are you using (and what kind of prv)?

Some say a 1 second sharp burst others say release the gas gently for a little longer trial and error i guess. I would see how the king keg goes as you have beer in it and you will need to repressure at a later stage you should see then if it will hold its shape.TT.

No beer in it now, as I turned the tap and released the beer as feared it could explode. I normally use an S30 but on this ocassion used a sodastream gas cylinder with an adapter.

When I took the lid off the KK there was a lot of dry ive in the air.

DO I dare risk filling it with water and adding gas?

You should be perfectly safe to pressure test it if you fill it with water as water will NOT compress.
So if you DO split the barrel you will just get a bit wet.

If you pressurise it empty and it bursts then the compressed gas will expand rapidly and flying debris may cause you injury.

BUT.... and its a big BUT... how can you test it if you dont have a pressure guage attached.

If the keg is empty then a long squirt of gas wil make hardly any pressure difference at all due to the room for the gas to expand.

If the keg is FULL of water(or beer) then a short 2 second squirt will raise the pressure rapidly as the gass has no where to go..

I think what I am saying is, all you can do is leak test it with water and a quick squirt of gas.
To test the PRV setting then you need to either fit a pressure guage somewhere OR risk splitting your keg.

DO you think I am better off just buying a new prv?

Also how do you think I should approach my HBS, do I have any comebacks?

I wouldn't admit to how much CO2 I'd put in it. Whilst your valve probably didn't actually stick it wasn't able to release the excess gas quick enough and that's why your keg went out of shape. This is evidenced by the dry ice you found when you emptied it. If you admit this to the HBS then he'll say you misused the keg.

I had the same happen to me with a budget barrel from wilcos, I complained they gave me my money back and a free beer kit for the incovenience

Just take it back and get a demand a replacement or your money back. Obviously that one "wasn't fit for the purpose".
If the pressure relief valve was working correctly it would have let the excess pressure escape.

Thanks for your thoughts. I took it back on Saturday and the HBS is going to send it back and ask for a replacement

Just a thought, Sale of Goods Act etc., why aren't the HBS giving you a replacement from their stock?

Yes ge kind of did offer. Just it would have left him without any stock. The HBS are normally really good and try to help where possible. I didn't want o push it too much.

It's your right as a consumer to have a replacement if it isn't fit for purpose, don't worry about your HBS man he will be quite used to replacing faulty stock so get yourself down there and get a replacement.
