Call me stupid but
Call me stupid but
I have just bottled my EDME stout and it is reading at 1.014 as a final gravity, it started at 1.035, how do i know what the ABV is, i have tried using the calculators on this site but struggled. Could anyone help please.
Re: Call me stupid but
Hello Stupid (well you did say call you stupid) your abv is about 3.3 abv according to my calculations
Re: Call me stupid but
Mark i've had a few too many tonight to explain how to work it out but her's a simple calculator for you to try.
Just type in your original gravity which was 1035 and the type inyour fg which was 1014 and hey presto you should get 3.3%

out of intrest what formula are you using ? I have always used - Starting g - final g / 7.4
hence 1035-1014 = 21
21 / 7.4 = 2.83 % alchool...
am I going wrong somewhere ??

Re: Call me stupid but
this is the problem i am having DrZiggy, thats why i asked the question. every place i check my results are different
Re: Call me stupid but
You need to add 0.5 - I think it accounts for the priming sugar.
Drinking - Young's Harvest Bitter
Conditioning - Coopers Australian Lager
Re: Call me stupid but
Thats correct (I think) I know you need to add something, but like I said im a bit too far gone to remeber the exact working out. But that calculator that I posted the lnk to should be bang onmope wrote:You need to add 0.5 - I think it accounts for the priming sugar.
Re: Call me stupid but
Let’s try it,
SG – FG / 7.4 + 0.5
(Sg) 1035 - (fg)1014 = 21
21 / 7.4 = 2.83
2.83 + 0.5 = 3.3
Yep same as the calculator
SG – FG / 7.4 + 0.5
(Sg) 1035 - (fg)1014 = 21
21 / 7.4 = 2.83
2.83 + 0.5 = 3.3
Yep same as the calculator
Re: Call me stupid but
To quote Coopers Brew Instructions:
Approx % alcohol by volume (ABV) = ((OG-GF)/7.46) + 0.5
0.5% is added to reflect the addition of priming sugar for secondary fermentation
Drinking - Young's Harvest Bitter
Conditioning - Coopers Australian Lager

nope lost myself now

just googled and found the follwoing page:
http://drunkmansguide.wordpress.com/200 ... your-beer/
so using that equation it still works out at 2.75
which is probably more correct as the formula I use should divide by 7.36 I just round up as it's more fun.
I can't see Prming sugar having that huge an effect on alchool content as I thought most of it turned to Co2 and alchool was produced during the FV as thats where the Yeast is at....
Any mathamatical chemist's in the building ??

Re: Call me stupid but
The co2 is produced from the yeast eating sugar and turning it into alcohol whether it’s in bottle, keg or fv. Co2 =yeast farts. It’s just when it’s in bottle or keg it doesn’t escape thus causing carbonisation.DrZiggy wrote:mope wrote:You need to add 0.5 - I think it accounts for the priming sugar.

Re: Call me stupid but
It seems they are essentially the same equation, with the exception one makes a correction for ethonol production during secondary fermentation.
I wouldn't worry about it too much though, these calculations I gather are only intended to give an estimate.

2.8%ABV from this site:-

Not surprised very low OG and not so low Final SG.

Re: Call me stupid but
So, if I use cornies and force carbonate, so dont add priming sugar....
The calculator I have been using is over reading by 0.5 ?

Booo!
now I will HAVE to drink more of it...
