Nethergate Umbel Ale

Post by Earth Titan » Mon Mar 02, 2009 9:11 pm

New I loved it from drinking it a few years ago and after a weekend of drinking it again, I am desperate to for some sort of clone. Anyone get a recipe? I'm looking for the 3.8% version not the Old Growler based one.

Question though. :?:

In the pub it was bottled and chilled and looked like a yeast beer, but was this a chill haze or is it a yeast beer?

Not sure what you mean by a yeast beer. It shouldn't be cloudy so if it is then I'd guess it is a chill haze.

This is from the Nethergate website:

"Freshly toasted coriander seeds are added to the grist and at the later stages of the boil, resulting in a festival of flavour and aroma."

Is that coriander in the mash as well as the boil Seymour?

Yep, pretty unusual, huh? It kinda makes sense, though, malted grains are the seeds of a grass plant. When we mash with nuts, those are the seeds of trees, etc...

I have a fairly direct contact to the brewer, I'll see if I can tease something out for you, but no guarantees unfortunately

Contact is in Dubai at the mo, but I haven't forgotten

NB: The only other info I have found (in two sources) matches Seymour's exactly

You always figure I'm just makin' this shit up, huh? :)

Sometimes I am--it's true--but for the record, I always preface those with "Seymour", and use the word "clone" so you can tell. If it's believed to be the actual recipe, I simply name the beer.

I know, just teasin' you. You're wise not to blindly trust a "bloody septic"* about English brewing.

Yesterday, I was insulted in Cockney Rhyming Slang for the first time, a very special moment for me. :)
