if your brew was infected you wouldnt be contemplating drinking it. and i think you have to chalk this one up to experience.....
the cheaper the kit- generally the worse the beer.[there are always exceptions] and they do improve after a few weeks conditioning.
its worth reading some of the recommendations on here and trying some of those. [eg; imo ,coopers stout/woodefords wherry]
i would always treat my brewing water with half a crushed campden tablet and think i would always go for either a dried or liquid malt in place of sugar too.
apart from that, keep experimenting `til you find a kit you like and then with a bit of brewing experience you can maybe go over to extract or even all grain for
an even better result :D .

Cheers brysie, I think once this lager is bottled I will take your advice and spend that little bit extra on a better kit. I used bottled water and beer enhancer on the lager kit I am doing and that tastes fine so far, so perhaps that was part of the problem with the bitter? I don't know. Thanks for all the tips from yourself and everyone else though, I am taking it all on board. :)
