Sorry if this has been asked before or is blindingly obvious. Is there a list anywhere that lists Malts/Grains that do not require mashing?

Re: Unmashed
As a rule of thumb I'd say Crystal malt and anything darker, I'm not sure about stuff like caramalt, munich / vienna or melanoidin though.
You will definately need to mash pale malt, wheat malt, torrified wheat and flaked maize.
What you got planned?

Cheers - I created the jpeg primarily to wind up the militant anti sparkler brigade in the beer blog community then I found out it made a good signature too!mysterio wrote:I love your signature JP

Not much at the moment. Was just wondering from the angle of creating extract brews using ag recipes.

Re: Unmashed
We should think ourselves lucky that there is not a militant pro-sparkler brigade otherwise we could find ourselves in the midsts of sparkler wars. Politicians would condemn the senseless violence and the police would have to hold occasional sparkler amnesties.J_P wrote:...the militant anti sparkler brigade...

Re: Unmashed
Thanks Chris,
I have a related question. Is the peat smoked malt on hop and grape likely to be good for steeping?
After the beer kit enhancing thread my idea now is a smoked porter made using some cheapy kits and steep some smoked grain. Just wondering if it's possible and what %age of my grain bill should be smoked so as not to overpower. Was thinking about 8%.

Re: Unmashed
I think that smoked malt generally requires mashing. I haven't used the peat smoked whisky malt but I wouldn't imagine it's any different from the German smoked malt in that respect (I hear the flavour and aroma is quite a bit stronger though). They are just ordinary pale malts, except that they have been dried over smoke.
Have you thought about liquid smoke? Or drop a kipper in the FV

Re: Unmashed
Try my new Kipper Porter, better than an oyster stout!
It was what I feared, may look at liquid smoke then. Suppose I could knock something up to mash a pound of grain though and see if that will work. Make a bain marie type thing in the slow cooker to keep a tub of it at warmth or something. Lol.
