cupboard bitter - now drinking (7days)

Post by Bionicmunky » Sat Mar 07, 2009 1:04 pm

Had to adjust my plan a wee bit due to lack of crystal #-o

so

Mash On!

6kg pale malt
200g Brown
200g carapils
about 100g of crystal I had left

hops will be (90 min boil)

30g fuggles FWH
30g goldings 60min
25g goldings 15min
30g fuggle 80c steep

Should hopefully give 42L 1035 @ 25ish IBUs

Hopefully I won;t get TCP this time [-o<

In the boiler and just added the 60min hops.

Pump worked and is a real back saver, used it to recirc the mash at the end of each batch for 4-5 mins, soooooo much easier.

No leaks in the boiler this time round either.

45L safely tucked up at 1035 looks like efficiency has gone up, prolly longer mash (2 hours) + recirc.

Looks like the pump also drains my mash tun dry which where I reckon the extra 3 litres came from.

now let's hope this one ferments out without any off flavours.

Congrats that everything worked out for you and it looks like a nice recipe to boot. Pumps are the dogs bollocks when it comes to back problems or if you're just lazy like me

So John, the malt store is officially empty then. Glad the brew fininshed ok.
Hopefully get my pump setup for the recirc in a couple of weeks.
The whole jugging thing at the end of the mash is a huge PITA ..
Check out the beers we have for sale @ Mix Brewery

Ar*e flap moment today,

Went up t'shed to check the brew and

1) the tap seal was leaking a wee bit, maybe 10ml over 20 hours
2) the hyrdo reading stated it had dropped all of 1 point

I reckon either the temp dropped too much last night or my ATC probe is over reading.

So swmbo help me lug it back into the house, I nervously managed sort out the leak, then checked inside. The krausen was more of a sludge, so tossed a pack of nottingham in (was s-04 pitched previously) as its the last satchet I had and gave it a good rouse with a sanitised whisk.

4 hours later, no leak and the airlock is bubbling happily every 7-10secs, checked inside and a nice foamy krausen is forming.

I dunno what's been going on with my luck recently but I'll be damned if i'm giving up.

Hopefully the leak didn't let any nasties in, tastes fine.

What doesn't kill you makes you a stronger, brighter, healthier and shinier munky.

Good luck with it! I hope it's a cracker.

down to 1015 tonight, 19 points in 26 hours, that's more like it.

Tastes lovely, the brown malt seems to be offering a bicuity flavour, nice! at this rate I may get my wish and be drinking it next week.

1010 as of 6pm today. We'll see if it dropped any tomorrow. Sample was lovely even with the yeast  First time I've ever necked the whole sample.

I used H&G liquid isinglass yesterday when I kegged it, I find it works in 24 hours. The 2nd 1/2 pint was absolutely crystal clear. (1st above after dumping the first pint of gloop).
