Still getting to grips with quanitites and hoping someone will help me with my effeciency, and explain to me in div terms how it works...
Well my last brew i ended up with less wort than i expected. So this time added a % more to get me about right.
Wanted to make 50 Ltrs of OSH. So estimated a total water use of 64 Ltrs.
Used
9456g Pale Malt
1173g Crystal Malt
Total Grain 10.629KG
worked off 2.5 Ltrs per KG so 26.5 Ltrs.
I have a dead space of 4 ltrs in my mash tun so added that on top. Total Mash Liquor of 30.5 Ltrs.
Started Mash and the liquor was too hot. Used 4 Ltrs cold water to bring temp down. (mental note about adding this to my Total Liquid count at the end)
Mashed at 66*C for 90mins.
Started to drain and sparge the remainder.
1st Running was 1072 @ 57*C
2nd Runnings was 1060 @ 50*C
3rd Runnings was 1012 @52*C
All run off and on the boil for 90 mins with
141g Challenger Hops @ Start of Boil
33g Goldings half way through the boil. (dunno why i didnt lob it in at the start like last time, just did)
15 mins before the end in went the Wort Cooler and Protofloc.
Cooled to 28*C and pumped to the FV.
Got 46 Ltrs @ 1060 @ 23*C
Added 4 Ltrs of cold water to bring up to 50 Ltrs and got a reading of 1053.
(there was prob about 3 - 4 ltrs still in the boiler that wouldnt Drain. Need to add some more small holes to the strainer at a lower height, it obviously seals damn well at the bottom, and doesnt let the rest drain off, lol)
So i started with 64 Ltrs in the HLT, added 4 to the Mash. Brings it up to 68 Ltrs in total.
Then added 4 Ltrs extra to the FV after the boil to get 50 Ltrs in total.
That means at the mo i have to add 45% water extra to what ever brew size i want to do (ie 50 ltrs = 72.5Ltrs)....

After i modify the Hop Strainer i may get those extra 4 ltrs missing in the FV back, which would mean its a 36% increase.
Does this sound about normal..
