kegging and bottling

Post by joel_m » Tue Mar 17, 2009 3:51 pm

Hi,

Brand new to this so this maybe a silly question but ...

This weekend hopfully I will finish fermenting my Wherry and I was going to split it between bottles and a keg. Problem is I don't have a bottling bucket and the 12 bottles I was going to use are of two different sizes some being Grolsch bottles and others being the same style but the 500ml dark brown Bernard dark larger bottles I tried recently from tescos.

Providing everything is sanitized is it ok to put my priming sugar in the keg then give it a gentle mix and syphon it from there in to the bottles before sealing the keg and bottles up to condition?

From reading on the forum am I correct in thinking that I should not use the keg tap for putting thre beer in the bottles as without pressure at the to it'll put air through the beer?

many thanks,

Bottling should be done by siphoning the beer straight to the bottom of the bottle only to avoid oxidisation.

Probably simpler to prime your bottles with dry sugar via a funnel and let the siphoning process mix the sugar into your beer.

Thant brilliant thanks for the help and advice.

If I then add my sugar to the bottle then the beer or the other way around does it make any difference?

If you add the sugar to the beer already in the bottle you will find it has a violent reaction and blows froth out everywhere  .Ask me how I know  Best to add sugar to bottles first then add beer. :D
