First AG Brewday

4kg Pale Malt
0.5 Crystal

30g Fuggles
20g Challenger
5g Fuggles (last 15mins)

Safale yeast

Completed my first AG brew on Saturday. Think I did pretty much everything wrong but I guess it all comes down to experience. Ended up with only about 15lt of wort but it seem to be fermenting fine so I might end up with something drinkable.
Made myself a shopping list:

Hydrometer (sticking a finger in doesn't seem quite accurate enough)
Plastic tubing (there isn't enough bleach in the world to sanitise the twenty-year old hose I was using)
A few feet of copper pipe (for cooling - it took about 90 minutes in an ice bath)

Really looking forward to next time - already know what I'll do differently (there's about a kilo of Fuggles blocking the sink, bath, toilet and drain in my flat now)

Anyone have a recipe for a Shepard Neame Masterbrew clone?

Cheers

Nice one. You ended up with something fermenting so you can't have done everything wrong.
A hydrometer is essential. You would have been able to take the OG of your 15 litres and decide whether to dilute it up a bit.

Start planning your next one!

If you got 15L of fermentable wort, then all the basics were just fine! You're probably fermenting something quite strong due to evaporation and other factors, and could probably afford to have liquered it back (watered it down) to 20L maybe. That hydrometer will certainly help, but get two because they are easy to break and it's a pain ordering another. Making your own chiller is quite satisfying too. Mine looks awful compared to some of the neat jobs you'll find on here, but even mine does the trick! Good luck on the next one!

I ended up with the same on my 1st ag brew when I wanted 23lt. I took no consideration of loosing wort during the 90 minute boil & loosing water in the mash, which was soaked up by the grains. Don't worry, once you get to know your brewing system you will soon be making brews to be proud of.

Congrats on your 1st ag brew btw.
