help, new to brewing

Post by Lee G » Fri Mar 27, 2009 4:22 pm

hello, i have just started homebrewing and i need some advice about my 1st beer, its a geordie scottish export and it has been fermenting for 10 days now with the hydrometer reading 1.010, the readings have not changed much for the last 3 days but the instructions say the reading should get down to below 1.005 for 2 days, is it taking so long because the temperature where i keep it is at the bottom end of the scale 18-19c, their is still a head on the brew and bubbles in the sample of beer i take out so is it still ok to leave it longer
thanks
Lee

Don't worry if you don't get down to 1.005 as it probably won't go that low especially if you added spray malt or beer enhancer (which is 50% spray malt). The important thing is that the reading is the same on 2 consecutive days.
Best wishes

If the hydrometer gives you the say in two consecutive days, it means no more fermentation is present, and thus bottle safe.

Edit: Keg safe, didn't read properly
