Help think kit not started fermenting

Hi everyone i think i've got a problem with my Coopers draght.
I made it up last night, followed the instructions carefully.It had a temp of 22c and a hydrometer reading of 1040 before i pitched the yeast.
The cupboard is about 18c/19c and the f.v has a blanket round it.
I had a look this morning and it has no signs of life? I took the temp of the wort? with a sterilised thermometer and it was 20c.
Am i panicking to soon? its been 13hrs since i made the kit up, not sure what to do

Give it a full 24 hours

Dont panic sometimes it can take 24 hours before you see any signs of fermentation. Did you give it a good stir when you pitched the yeast?

I bet by 9pm tonight you'll be back reporting some movement (ooer)

In fact in the days before I used to rehydrate my yeast, I was worrying over a brew that hadn't started after nearly a day, it wasn't until the missus asked what this little silver packet was by the breadbin!!!! Forgot to pitch it!

Yeah i gave it a good stir when i pitched the yeast, i didnt rehydrate the yeast first just sprinkled it in.
The cupboard does drop a few degrees at night/morning beacause i live in a old draughty cottage.

Panic over! i checked it earlier and its started to show signs of life

I was 2 minutes out!

Try your best to leave it alone now for at least a week, unlike me on my first brew, must have checked it 15 times, even wrapped a blanket round it!

I read somewhere that you should skin the scum off the top after a few days?
Not sure if thats correct tho?
I'm trying my hardest to leave it alone, checked it today after work but will now leave it well alone, should the lid stay slightly ajar or close it down now?

I've never found the need to skim the scum off the top. It'll die down naturally after a few days and I'd be worried about the risk of introducing infection. I just put the lid loosely on top (mainly because it's a fight to the death to get it off if I press it down hard LOL). My FV has a grommet hole so I put the lid from a kit on that to stop anything dropping in.
