Flat lager and cider

Post by dionferguson » Tue Mar 17, 2009 9:42 am

Finally got round to trying my lager and cider at the weekend and although they have only been conditioning in the barrel for two weeks now they are both still fairly flat, i expected as much from the lager after some reading on here but the cider i was expecting a bit more fizz from

I have a bottling stick that i use to fill my pints from to stop the fizz escaping while drawing it off and there seems to be planty of fizz in it when it coming down the stick and without the stick i end up with over half a pint of head, my 1st thoughts were that it would settle down once the pressure dropped off a bit which it has however they're stll a bit flat yet fizzing like mad coming down the stick?

Should i just leave themn to condition further? and will the gas increase with time? or should i transfer to bottles and re-prime? they are both really drinkable and i'm really impressed with them for my 1st attempts and i was grinning like a cheshire cat on sunday night when i christened them  and boy do you know when you've had a few! a little more fizz wouldn't go a miss though so is there anything i can do to improve this? or is patience the key?

If you're sure that you have a good seal on your keg then you could try moving it to somewhere cooler so that it absorbs more of the co2.

Ok well i decided to bottle 6 bottles of each last week and got round to trying a lager last night and if anything it's flatter now than it was before!?

must have lost all it's fizz during transfer? going to leave the others in there and see how they are as the first ones i filled up were all froth, think next time i'll go straight to the bottle or will adding sugar now to the bottles aid further carbonation?

Read on here before that bottles were best for lager and kegs for beer and cider
my first two kits were quite flat (lager). the only thing ive changed is leaving them in the warm for 7 days before moving them to the shed in the cold.My lager is now carbonated much better and very enjoyable.Hope this helps
