Youngs Bitter

Post by Ady1975 » Tue Apr 07, 2009 5:05 pm

I finished my first ever brew last month, i'm starting right at the bottom and will probably stick with kits for a while due to the ease of it all.
Anyway, I had an obvious case of 'first brew impatience' and got stuck into my Youngs bitter (made with brewing sugar and demerara for priming) almost as soon as i could with a neighbour, we got hammered! we both thought it tasted suprisingly good ut I must admit we were not expecting much at all.
well, following that immense session i emptied the rest of the barrel into pop bottles and left them alone for another 3 weeks and i've just decided to pop one open and have an after work drink.... WOW!... what a difference a few weeks make, it tastes completely different now. For a bargain basement kit i'm well impressed, the better kits must be really good and i look forward to brewing some 'higher quality' ales in the future but i cannot be anything other than impressed by this budget brew, I would also like to add weight to the fact that patience is clearly a winner in this brewing game and a lesson I am glad to have learned early on.
now, I hope my youngs lager gives me a similar result, it's just gone out into storage so another month and i'll be able to get a good idea...

cheers everyone! :)

Nice one Ady, it took me a lot longer than the one brew to learn that patience improves the flavour no end!
I have a similar problem now, as I have just kegged my first All grain brew, and like after my first kit was kegged I am so keen to see how it has turned out... glad I am going away for easter as that is a few days at least to avoid temptation!!!
Learning to keep your mits off is the hardest thing I have had to learn in brewing!

Congratulation Ady on your first brew.Must admit I did a Young difinitive bitter awhile back with a bag of bke and it took ages to clear. When it did it wasn't great but I supped it anyway. Try a Coopers bitter from Wilko next well worth the extra few quid.

I'll defo try a coopers kit next, possibly the australian lager one. I definitely need to get another batch of lager on the go so i'm well stocked up in time for summer barbies etc, then i'll get a nice ale or 2 on the go, ready for the wintertime.
