Is the Youngs barrel and CO2 cap any good?
Re: Is the Youngs barrel and CO2 cap any good?
the reason I prefer KK's is that the tap seal is set into the keg where as my budget keg's seal is not and is prone to splaying.
Re: Is the Youngs barrel and CO2 cap any good?
I agree. The budget barrels are excellent and I have not experienced any problems or leaks from the tap washer. Just a slight drip from my first keg when the tap was fully closed which was easily solved by backing it off 2-3mm.KevP wrote:I have 3 KKTT's and a Wilko budget, had a problem with my KK's twice, but easily solved at no cost, the budget was fine too, I do like the Top Taps but don't know if I would get 3 again if I was just starting, they are bloody expensive, and I am just as happy with the cheapo budget.
My next brew is going into my empty KK Top Tap. Just hope the cap seals this time!

Re: Is the Youngs barrel and CO2 cap any good?
The only prob with the budgets is I like a top tap for ease of pouring as I store some of mine in an insulated outside storage box, keeps them wonderfully above freezing even on the coldest night, but I cant affors to raise them, hence the TT's win here, plus you can sup the beer sooner

I bought two KK from Glenbrew £36.50 each and £1.50 p&p. That was the cheapest I could find.
But I see Arkwrights now do a HB ROTO KEG 23 Litre for £33.50

Yes Glenbrew is open. I only bought mine a couple of weeks ago. They respond quite quickly to emails as well. The website is:

Re: Is the Youngs barrel and CO2 cap any good?
As an update, all four of my last brews have come out beautifully. Each pint is perfectly gassed until the last three, it really does come out like creamflow. A good week in the warm for carbonation seems to be about right. My biggest lesson from this is that you must never overtighten the lid, it apprears the o ring can unseat istelf and try and squirm through the thread in an attempt to escape causing your precious CO2 to follow it. I now go finger tight and then a quarter turn more, that's good old engineering talk there.

Re: Is the Youngs barrel and CO2 cap any good?
Hi everyone. I have just put my first batch bitter, 40 pints into a youngs barrel. It had been fermenting for two weeks and the hydrometer said it was okay to bottle/cask. Since putting in to barrel with sugar, 20 spoonfuls as per recipe, I also dry hopped with goldings hops, The barrell has appears to have swollen. I did not want to risk an explosion or loss of tap, so I released the cap,( pictured above in a reply)to release some of the gas.
Is this normal. As my name suggests, I am new at this and would welcome all the help I can get.

It's usual to only add 85 grams of sugar when kegging so I'm not sure if 20 spoonfuls is too much.
Rather than opening the cap you can release excess gas by squeezing the rubber washer on the valve. You should, however, check that the rubber is not stuck since it should be venting off excess gas over 9 psi.

Thanks lilly white. I shall see what 85 grams equates to. Thanks for the info regarding the valve. I shall check this when I get home.

Providing you are talking teaspoons then 20 shouldn't be a problem. I prime my bottles with a level teaspoon of brewers sugar and haven't had any problems.Nobby Novice wrote:Thanks lilly white. Re: Is the Youngs barrel and CO2 cap any good?
As another novice I must say that this thread has been most useful! The missus is getting a little vexed with the empty bottles always lying around the house so I have transferred to kegs. Or Young's Keg at the moment. I was a little bit dubious about the pressure release valve on the top and was thinking about getting one of the modified ones with the injector/pressure release things. This thread has certainly boosted my confidence in them!
I'm curious about the pressure thing. Is it really only 9psi?
Incidently, the getting the Young's barrles was ace, £17.99 + £5 delivery. This is ideal for someone like myself who is stuck up the in NE of scotland (Aberdeen) and has no car. There is a distinct lack of brewshops up this neck of the wood.
The girlfriend's family should be getting me a couple of them for my crimbo and herdad is building me (allegedly) a nice cabnet thing to keep them in for my living room. Just need to make sure it has a bund in the bottom incase one leaks and I should be laughing
Anyhow, thanks again for this thread. I shall drink a (bubbly) beer to your health when it's done!
