Thanks for the replys, i normally make sure i wash my glass out with water before pouring so do not think that is a problem so maybe just to cold will try and put some in a jug and bring to warm slightly and see how it goes.

as ditch says, mine when poured into a pint glass until the froth hits the rim i will get probably about a 3rd of a pint in the glass i have no patience in waiting to top up so just means more trips to the keg. my keg is under the stairs the same place i ferment it seems to be perfect temp for brewing and drinking. bring that keg back in the house if your missus complains lock her in the shed over night to cool down a bit lol

I have been folowing this thread with interest and amusement and decided that I just had to see what you were all on about.
So today i bought a second FV and some Coopers Stout.
Its a 5 gal Fv with a bit of headroom, only put 22l in, maybe it wont spill over. But i've put a few old towels underneath in case.
I started it this afternoon and will keep you informed as it progresses.
OG 1044.
1 kg Brewers sugar.

I started my first stout on sunday, but i did to 20ltr and the froth is on the very limit of coming through the bubbler, it is definatly a special brew!

My Coopers stout is looking good. After 16 hrs it was bubbling away nicely. I kept my eye on it over the next 24 hrs waiting for it to try to escape, It got near the top but did not make a break for freedom. It has settled down a tiny bit and looks like the danger is over.
Fv used is a Youngs 5 gal, It looks to max out at about 7 gal, so Maybe that and the fact I only filled to 22l and used Brewers sugar. temp at 18deg.
I will still be keeping it on 1hr checks tho.

good stuff
i leave my lid with a bit of a gap for a few days until it settles a bit then snap it down.got the larger fv but it still reached the lid and left a nice deposit on it,but did not escape.
got my fourth stout on the go using medium spray malt and i think i will try ditches idea of not priming the keg see how it goes.
drinking the last few litres of the dark ale and it has matured nicely,another coopers success story ,tre malty goodness!!
nearly got away with not putting any co2 in.!!
off to a local micro brewery next week to see how its done cant wait.
cheers no one with dodgey eye brows is putting 2p on my ale thank you very much darling!!!!

Ive just put my Coopers brewmaster Irish stout on using 500 kg extra dark malt extract and 400 g brewing sugar it had an o.g of 1.038 so if it finishes at 1.006 like my other coopers it'll give me about 4.1 abv
Has anyone done this one before as Ive only tried the standard Ditch's stout before

well ive done another one of these bad boys and for the sake of experiment ive tried a little variation with me priming sugars.
i wasnt disappointed with my first one, but always in the search for perfection ive primed as follows....
10 done as the dark lord himself decrees, no priming.
10 with 2g demarara sugar per pint.
10 with 2g light dsm per pint. and just for a larf...
10 with 2g caster sugar per pint.
apart from the dsm frothing out the top of the bottles, nothing else untoward to report.
it will be interesting to see what if any difference any of this makes, but its a good reason to `test` a few bottles of the old black stuff in a few weeks
when theyve had chance to `condition`.
i cant help but wonder , how did luke skywalker resist the temptation to go over to the dark side?

Now, this is Not to say I'm adverse to bottles. I just prefer my beer from a keg. In fact, were I to have the choice available to me of what ye have there? One bottle? I'd ask for a 'Demarara'. I'd probably take ye hand off for a Raw Cane. But I'm curious if ye D there might not be better suited to a Stout?
That said? I must remember that ye Priming Bottles there. Not using the sugar as a FV Fermentable. Thus I doubt the likes of me could even discern a difference. I just enjoy a 'Good Pint. I'm sure none of those will come out too wide of the mark ~ Though, an unprimed bottle? Hey! Could even turn out as something I'd prefer!

It made sense (ish) to me Ditch, but then I'm probably as trousered as you most of the time!
By the way sir, how is all that Stout you bought getting on? you must have had a good couple of barrels conditioned by now!
