KEG HELP NEEDED!!

Post by John-H » Tue Apr 21, 2009 12:49 am

i have a smaller keg than my fermenting bin so my question is....

after fermentation, would it be safe for some of the brew to stay in the fermenting bin after fermentation has ended,as i cannot fit all 40 pints in my keg at once, would it not go 'funny' or 'off' if it matured in fermenting bin??

cheers,

john

It'd be exposed to the air and turn to vomit, John. Why not make less, so it all fits into ye keg? ('Less Is More!' )

What the hell sort of FV and keg ye dealing with there anyway?

 That'll be absolutely fine then, John. Industry Standard, mate. Add the correct (or less) amount of water to the initial brew and it'll all come together perfectly.

nice 1 ditch  after putting the water in my keg with a beaker (holds a lil bit more than a pint) for sterilising,i have come to the conclusion that if it does not fit it all in,it will be very close.

do i really have to syphon or can i just pour it in slowly via a funnell?

cheers,

Syphon it John. Don't risk 40 odd pints of pleasure by oxidising the hell out of your beer. Syphoning is a ridiculously easy practice anyway, get it going, put it at the bottom of the keg and let her fill up gently. King kegs hold more than 25 litres so youll be absolutely fine with regard to that.

nice 1 bud...ive got a youngs ubrew syphoning kit anyway...i think my brew will be ready for maturing tomorow,as my hydrometer reading has been 1.010 yesterday and today!! my keg is sterilising as we speak...as it has mould in the bottom because of the water and i need to let it soak for 12 hours.

Regards " Syphoning ", What this site has long since taught me to do is to buy a meter of the right sized plastic hose to fit over the tap at the base of my FV's. Slip the hose onto the tap. Poke the other end, as Arturobandini says, to the bottom of ye keg. (Obviously, for this we have the FV elevated above the keg). Open that tap.

This is a great advance on sucking about with thin bits of pipe, like we used to do. I remember spending many an arm deadening hour, holding a wretched 1/4" diameter length of tube as the beer piddled out  Now it's just crack, gush, done

Mould in ye keg? Strong, hot solution of Soda Crystals and a cloth. Pop the cloth in. Pour in a pint or two of soda solution. Cap on and shake the hell out of it. That'll shift the mould.

Then sanitise as normal.

i think ill syphon it as normal as i think it will be ready to go in the keg either tomorrow/thursday or friday. and at least ill get a wee mouthfull n taste of what ma brew is gunna taste like ;-p
and as for the mould...i put about 5 teaspoons of youngs ubrew sanitiser in me keg/filled it right to the top with HOT water and ive left it overnight. thats what it said on the back of the dsanitiser tub anyway.

Ditch is right about the mould and the syphoning technique. Soda Crystals are much better for mould too as sanitiser doesn't have the power to shift the hard stuff it's more for getting things "proper" for beer.

Supermarkets do indeed sell (Washing) Soda Crystals. Only, one more tip, John: Save yeself the heartache. Ask for them! There really seems to be little rhyme or reason behind why or where they choose to hide them
