I am about to bottle Burton Bridge Porter and I notice the priming instructions state "1/2 teaspoon of sugar per pint...(or a maximum of 56gms (2oz) per 22.5 litres (5 gallons))"
It's usually more like twice that much sugar and I wondered if this was a error in the instructions.
I have a couple of other instructions leaflets lying around:
Munton's stout - "half a teaspoon full of sugar per pint...(or a maximum of 85gms 3oz, per 5 UK Gallon pressure barrel)"
Morgan's Dark Ale - "6g (a heaped teaspoon) of white sugar to...750ml bottles" - which is 180g in 5 gallons!
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
Burton Bridge Beer Kit - priming instructions misprint?
Re: Burton Bridge Beer Kit - priming instructions misprint?
It looks about right - half a tsp for a "standard" ale or a whole tsp for a lager to get that extra fizz (only realy applicable in a bottle) - this is the general rule of thumb.
Re: Burton Bridge Beer Kit - priming instructions misprint?
I have a John Bull kit that's says 3/4-1cup of sugar in 5 gallons which is 6.5 and 8.7gms per litre.
Coopers say 8gms per litre.
Brewferm go with about 10 gms per litre.
Woodfordes says 1/2 teaspoon per pint bottle or barrel which is 4gms a litre
But I have been told that for barrelling to go for no more than 80-100gms per 23 litres so the Burton seems a bit low at 56gms per 23 litres.

Re: Burton Bridge Beer Kit - priming instructions misprint?
I bottled a Burton Bridge Summer Ale last week. I used the suggested 56 grammes. If I were kegging it I'd have probably added more to reduce the amount of CO2 I'd need to inject as the keg empties. If your porter tastes half as good as the original does in the Bridge Inn I think you'll be well chuffed

Best wishes

I agree but I've seen kits recommend 2-3 ozs when kegging.Mogwyth wrote: But I have been told that for barrelling to go for no more than 80-100gms per 23 litres so the Burton seems a bit low at 56gms per 23 litres.
I would always add 3 ozs (85 grams) when kegging.
Re: Burton Bridge Beer Kit - priming instructions misprint?
gotta agree with chris on this one.
i personally use around 80g for my wherrys and stout [2g per pint] and around 150 for my lagers but thats cos i like my lager extra cold and sparkly.
i did, a while back use way too much [mistake using sugar cubes and half pint bottles
] but it turned out fine.
im just bottling a ditch/ coopers stout today and am planning to bottle ten with no extra priming sugar as an experiment.
[thats how the lord high stout master does his]
and im going to do ten with dsm just to see if i like it better that way.
its all about experimenting to find out which you prefer. then make sure you keep a record so you can copy it in the future if you really like it.
