The bottle of yeast which I have in the fridge laying under wort,as what Jim does has a dark layer on top of the yeast slurry is this normal and is it okay to make a starter out of.

Can I use brewing sugar instead of spraymalt to make a big starter so that I can split my liquid yeast as in jims tips.

I would suspect that the sugar does not have the nutrients to support the yeast.
