Anchor steam recipe:wanted
Anchor steam recipe:wanted
I've just bought the WLP001 California Ale yeast.
I now need an Anchor steam recipe, using UK-available hop varieties, if possible.
Also, any other suggewstions for brews I could use this yeast with?
Thanks
Mike

Re: Anchor steam recipe:wanted
Well, WLP01 is a very good yeast but I don't think that is what I would use if I were making an Anchor Steam clone. The brewery acutally uses a lager yeast which is fermented at a somewhat higher temperature than normal lagers. I think both Wyeast and White labs sell that yeast but off the top of my head I don't remember what the product numbers are, you might check out their web sites.
WLP01 is the famed yeast used by our buddies in Chico California and endorsed by all the Deadheads around the world. That stuff is really good for making APA's, American IPA's and most west coast style ales. I just got done fermenting with that yeast and it is a very active fermentor, it blew off the fermentation lock on the last two beers I made (an APA and I also used that yeast to start an Oud Bruin before I added the bugs). You will find that the yeast is not as expressive as many of the British ale yeasts, a good characteristic depending on what you are trying to get done. I sometimes use it to over-yeast big beers I intend to bottle condition and also occasionally to make sure a beer I made attenuates enought without covering up the flavors of the primary yeast.

Drinking:Saison (in bottles), Belgian Dubbel (in bottles), Oud Bruin (in bottles), Olde Ale (in bottles),
Abbey Triple (in bottles), Munich Helles, Best Bitter (TT Landlord clone), English IPA
Conditioning: Traditional bock bier, CAP
Fermenting: Munich Dunkel
Next up: Bitter (London Pride like), ESB
So many beers to make, so little time (and cold storage space)

Re: Anchor steam recipe:wanted
I can confirm the Northern Brewer - they absoultley have to be there. My clone came out pretty well, a good beer that I will be revisiting.
Re: Anchor steam recipe:wanted
can I point you in the direction of here. The second brew (with pics) is meant to be a close Anchor Steam type beer. Didn't want to use Saf04 but had no choice!
Re: Anchor steam recipe:wanted
Funny you should say that - my clone also used that yeast, I think it did an ok job.

lol, glad to hear I'm not the only one. Was a bit P'd off when I couldn't get anything else cos I'd been lookin forward to doing this brew and should have been a bit more organised. J
ust gave it a quick test from the FV last night though, bloody close considering. Think I'll soon get through this 26L and will have to do another with an appropriate yeast for comparison
