We should have variety races :)

my fuggles is well in the lead with a 20cm bine and 2 other shoots below it. The cobbs is slower, but has 4 shoots, one of which has shot out to the side.

First pic is the Challenger - the red stem and darker leaves are the giveaway. Challenger hop cones can be quite long too.

I don't know whether it was the warm April weather we have had but my old bines (Challenger and Cobb Golding) are romping away, more like the growth I would expect by mid-May. I've been ruthless in restricting the number of shoots this year. I'm also trialing a new support system based on hanging basket hangers and washing line - I kid you not! New plants for this year... Fuggle about where yours is, Prima Donna only made 4-5".

When I get chance I'll take some shots and post them.

Here are my two year old Fuggles and Challenger.

They seem to be loving the weather and have reached the top of the trelis already. They are also producing side shoots which didnt happen last year till much later.

My first gold plants are coming into their third year and they are still neophytes compared to some of the specimens on show on this thread  I guess NI is just not a great place for hop growing.

My hop growing efforts are doing okay this year. I have a similar experience with Bramling Cross though, and can only assume it's just a late season hop. It did the same last year.

My BX are finally staring to show signs of life. Hopefully they will rocket up now.

Just to make things clear. Is it best to leave just three shoots growing and pull the rest off? Last year I just left it do its thing.

Hi

Is it too late to plant rhizomes?
Can I plant in large long containers on bricks with plenty of drainage next to an East Facing wall?
They would be on a patio and I dont fancy breaking it up!

Thx

Chances are you probably won't get a harvest this year but they should establish themselves nicely for next year and if the containers are large i don't see why they wouldn't produce a decent size crop.
