Cleaning stains from inside bottles

Post by StrangeBrew » Wed Dec 06, 2006 10:52 pm

Just got my hands on 60 second hand brown pint bottles and some have a cloudy staining on the inside.
Is there a reliable product that will remove this stain and restore them to a clean state?

Thanks...

I use oxy-plus (oxyclean) for mine.

Does Oxyclean come in a powder form like washing powder?

How long is a 'good soak'? 12/24 hours?

Try hot water 1st SB

The glass shouldn't be stained, it'll just be a small deposit which should come off with some hot water and a good shake 8)

I get this 'staining' left when the remaining water evapourates from the bottle after washing

Vossy, it's all up the inside walls as well as the base and on close inspection it looks like the previous owner had tried to scub them with a bottle brush...obviously not very well though!

I've never had anything that's taken more of a soak than an hour in warm water and oxy-plus.

I use this stuff at <£2/kg.

But have started using soda crystals for light stuff. 55p/kg

Ahhh, bleach is cheap and effective. It just needs to be rinsed thouroughly with hot water. Soak overnight and rinse in the morning.

I had some stains in some of my bottles, the dowel with scouring sponge fixed the the end (as mentioned somewhere here) was great at scrubbing the bottles, as bottle brush was less than useless

I was about to dump a load of bottles as they had stains that I couldn't remove with a bottle brush but I got a 500ml bottle of Liquid Soda Crystal at PoundStretchers today for 99p. I soaked a dozen of them for a couple of hours in a warm diluted solution and they have all come out perfect. 8) I have only used a tiny amount so it will be perfect for tackling the rest when I get around to it.

In the meantime I now have the 40 bottles I need to bottle my Bitter and Twisted.

I am rather late supplying this suggestion, just browsing and gathering what info I can on all subjects. (What a great forum)
Anyway when drinking in a local pub many years ago and discussing this very subject with a much elder gentleman regular, you know the one that always sits in the same seat.
He suggested for stuborn stains to put coal dust in a suspension of water and circulate/ shake vigorusly, or a sand of some sort
It alway cured my stains and residues
