Post by RabMaxwell » Thu Nov 30, 2006 4:25 pm

I have just bought a 25 kg sack of Flaked Maize from one of them farm shops for £6. Looks the same as hop & grapes stuff. Apparently it's sold as horse feed i do like a bargain

That's a lot of flaked maize. Most beers that use it tend to use about 5-10% in the grist (Fullers use it in several beers).

I use Flaked Maize in any recipe that asks for maltose syrup. I make Belhaven 80/- clone from Wheelers Brew your own real ale at home using flaked maize quite often. I brew 110 Litre batches & 200 Gallons or more a year so should be able to get through it. Cheers

flaked maize/ rice is mainly used in lagers because it adds % but not so much flavour.
Dodson & Horrel £5/25kg :) . 20kg of marris otter was only £20 from the local microbrewery.

Rab thats a lot of beer!

Rab, do you replace the maltose syrup with the flaked maize directly gram for gram?

I use Wheelers recipes but a lot of them use maltose and you can't get it anymore.

I just spoke to the Iceni Brewery in Norfolk and they said they sell 25kg of malt for £15, 1kg packs of hops (Goldings, Fuggles, Challenger, Cascade etc) for £7 and 500g packs of Nottingham for £14 (they do sometimes have the 500g S-04 as well). Those are their minimum pack sizes and the prices are those direct from the shop.

Hello Garth if i am creating new beers i use Graham Wheelers calculations .And calculate the flaked maize as a percentage of the grist. But if i use a published recipe i replace gram for gram.I have used glucose syrup years ago from Hop & Grape but found you get a better flavour contribution from the flaked maize. Cheers

Just check if it is milled or not.

I can get it for £10 but it is whole grain.
