Dog'House Brew #001 (Edit : I've drunk some)

Well....

Dog'House Brew #001 is well and truly underway!

Brew day was yesterday, followed by the biggest bangers and mash dinner with pear and toffee crumble for pud, hence the lack of post last night!

Decided to do a Woodfordes Great Eastern Ale, and the whole thing went very smoothly. We sterilised everything to within an inch of it's life. And made sure we were very methodical.

There did come a point in the evening which I'm sure every brewer has faced, when the previous off-the-cuff throwaway mumblings to my lovely wife of "it can ferment in the garage" and "the conservatory will be fine" were finally replaced with the much more honest - "it needs to ferment in the kitchen because the garage is too cold and the conservatory is too warm.....er...." followed by a very sheepish smile.

"Riiiiggghhhttt........" came the reply.

It's fermenting away happily now, (in the kitchen :) ) with a two-inch head of foam and a bubbling through the airlock every 10-20 seconds or so. Yes, I've been timing it! Well it IS my first brew, so what do you expect...?

A couple of final points to mention. The OG was only about 1035 or so, prior to pitching the yeast. I think this may be because we put two litres extra water in by mistake - it's difficult to wrestle a pressure barrel of liquor and measure at the same time - need to think about that and possibly get another FV. Also we may not have quite got all the wort out of the cans. Next time I will be more careful with the former, and will purchase a washing-up brush to add to my rapidly multiplying brew kit, which can be sanitised and used to flush out those precious few scrapes of concentrated yummyness.

Stir away, Philip. You do the hard work - I'll record it for posterity.

Temp looks OK...

In with the yeast.

Come on! Hurry Up. I'm thirsty. Oh, this must be the patience bit.

Image
24 hours later - it's working!

Going...

Going...

Gone!

Oh, and my afore-mentioned wife also had a go sharing the yeast-pitching with me and my erstwhile assistant, Phil. We'll convert her yet.

Congrats on your first brew day!

Just keep your mits off it for 10 days, rack to bottles or a keg then keep your mits off it again for about three weeks and you'll be sampling your delights in the warm sunshine of beer and bbq's

Not be long before you start to consider going down the All Grain route

Come to the dark side

The kitchen is the natural home for anything you're going to eat or drink ;) To get the last bits out of the can, pour in a couple of pints of boiling water and work it around.
Best wishes

Thanks for the tips and encouragement.

It's still bubbling away nicely and erratically. This is chinese bubble torture, or perhapps bubble-boarding, for the poor dog, who sleeps off the kitchen.

Purchased my next kit today, too, for when this one is kegged up! York Brewery Yorkshire Terrier.

I seem to have developed a strong dog theme. What's next? Dogbolter?

All dog-related beery suggestions are welcome, and will be groaned at as appropriate.

For those who may be interested, the fermenting has ceased.

Brewed last Monday, and OG by Saturday evening was 1013. (from 1020 on Thursday, and 1035 on Monday). Happy with that. :D

Leaving it a couple more days and will be kegging it tomorrow evening (Tuesday) which is day 8.

Then on to the Yorkshire Terrier....

Mmmm.....

Yorkshire Terrier is a nice pint, i had the pleasure of trying this whilst at York Brewery.

A dog related brew you could also do is Dogs Bollox by Wychwood Brewery, even though i dont
think they brew it anymore as i aint seen it around for ages, and its not listed on their website.
Doubt you would have found it in a kit though, you`ed have to move over to the dark side and see
if anyone as a recipe for it.

Well doccumented there, I did a Great Eastern a couple of years ago, it took a while to clear but it tasted good.

On the subject of Dog related brews I have 3, Lucky7 named after my collie pointer cross, Alfreds Pale Ale named after my wire haired Jack Russel and a Porter called Jack Tar named after a Spaniel pup we babysit.

Ahh. I understand. My covetous eyes are already being seduced by such shiny things....

Anyway, I've just racked the ale. Had a wee sook on the syphon tube - which I am a bit concerned about, seeing as how I am trying to stay hygenic - but couldn't see any other way. Anyway it tasted not too bad, even prior to secondary fermentation in the KingKeg, and subsequent maturing.

Now I've just got to keep my sticky mitts off it for three weeks.

New wife quote - "That smells lovely - I can't wait to try it!"

And second new wife quote - "That wasn't nearly as much of a fankle as I thought it would be" - I knew I'd chosen the right lady....

Thanks for comments, and will let you know how it tastes. Brew #2 coming soon at the weekend (ish) I think.

Dog'House.

Just to let you all know, if you're interested, that the Woodfordes Great Eastern Ale is now ready, and is being drunk gradually. Very fizzy coming out of the tap on the keg - seems to be all or nothing - I get about half a pint in a pint glass once the head has settled to fill the rest of the glass. Not sure what, if anything I can do about this.

Not sure I want to do anything to upset the brew, as it is clear as a bell, and also because it tastes great! I would find it an 'acceptable' pint if I was served it in a pub, which I think for a first attempt is not too bad at all.

I have guests coming to stay tonight, one of whom runs a guest house, and always has a keg of fizzy bitter on the go - and always offers it when we visit, which is nice. He's my first guinea pig. I'll let you know what happens.

And SWMBO likes it too, although she prefers it as a shandy - I'm not fussed about that. The important thing is that she likes it, and now wants to know if I can "brew a really strong one for our summer barbeque, to get everyone p***ed"!

i think she's coming round....

I have explained that it would mean some DIY, and extra bits of kit, to make sure it was all done properly (AG, here we come!) She is very happy with that. And of course I must obey her, obviously, so what can a man do...?

Cheers all!!
