Which water?

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Which water?

Post by clatters69 » Sat May 09, 2009 10:30 am

I've always used water from my cold kitchen tap for my brews, treated with a camden tablet. It seems to do well enough, but I'd like to do better. As I have a water softener, I have three options:

1) Carry on as before.

2) Use water from the bathroom tap, which is covered by the water softener (the cold kitchen tap is not). I could use either hot or cold softened water, with or without camden tablets or any other treatments.

3) As I am a science teacher, I have access to a water still which we use at school to produce distilled water for experiments. I could easily produce a couple of aspirators to bring home and use, again, with or without camden tablets etc.

I am in St Albans, where the water is very hard, if that makes a difference. Any thoughts?

Thanks for that. I've had a brief look at the pH adjustment page and will go through the process to identify the concentration of salts. I can feel a 6th form project coming on for the post-exam period as a whole classful of experiments will be more accurate than my cack-handed attempts.

Thanks again.
