I tried the stonewall..... purchased the kit from H&G and plan to brew it next.

That's where I purchased them from and was the only place I found them available on-line and got two kits so the £4.70 postal charge was very reasonable.

Are the kits close to the real thing ? It would help me decide which one to pick up.

Shame they don't do Centurian's Ghost tho, best commercial beer on the Planet

I'm currently drinking York Terrier and Stonewall Bitter.

They are both excellent with the Terrier lighter, crisper and hoppy and the Stonewall darker and malty.

They're still improving in the keg.

Highly recommended.

Well I seriously don't know what I did wrong but it just tasted very weird! A very earthy taste, still drinkableish, but I did Terrier and Stonewall and both just didn't turn out very nice at all. I boiled the spraymalt in a pan before adding as some people say this was better, but the hops to me just seem extremely overpowering and just not a nice brew. Fingers crossed for the next one!

That's where you went wrong. You should have followed the instructions and not listened to the not so wise words of others.

All you needed to have done was to mix the malt extract with the spraymalt in the boiled water.

Fingers crossed for EDME's Strong Irish Stout, I stuck to the damn instructions on the packet and it smells great!

Do you mind me asking why? I understand that there's no real need to boil spraymalt (I do, but that's cos I'm excessively paranoid about infections ) but why would doing so have any negative effect on the beer?

Can't give you a technical answer but none of the modern day kits stipulate about the need to boil either malt extract or spraymalt.
I believe you should follow the manufacturer's instructions as closely as possible when trying to replicate beer that is commercially available as in this case with the York Terrier Bitter.

There's a big difference between kit LME and plain LME. Kit LME will have been through the whole mash/boil cycle prior to concentration so will have been subjected to temperatures high enough to ensure pasteurisation. plain LME has only gone through the mash tun so really needs to be boiled to pasteurise it. I don't know how spraymalt is pasteurised though.

Fair enough, I just wanted to check in case boiling it did something odd that I wasn't aware of. Don't want to drink the rest of my Coopers Stout only to find that the boiled spraymalt has caused me to grow breasts or an extra head or something

Just to resurrect a slightly old thread, did you leave the Terrier a few more weeks or did you junk it in the end? I've had a Terrier barreled for about 5 and a half weeks and I think I've got the same effect (though I just used sugar, not spraymalt, and didn't boil it). Earthy taste and an extremely bitter aftertaste.

I guess I'm just wondering whether it's worth hanging on for a few more weeks in the hope that it mellows out, or whether I should pour it away and start again.
