Re: Bottles or kegs?
I prefare bottles, easier to chill a few in the fridge before drinking , but lately considering the barrel as it might stop me father in law asking me if i wouldn't mind parting with a few every time he calls

birdy lah,
youre missing a chance here. get the old fella into brewing a few of his own and youve got a co op on your hands.

brysie, have dropped him more than a few hints, but he sez his missus hates the smell of home brew in the house, hmmm

Re: Bottles or kegs?
Bottles means I brew and keep a wider range without the worry of having to drink a keg full.

I use both, mainly barrels though. I use that as an excuse to NOT bring some into work to give to colleagues.
Barrels are quicker and easier, bottles are cheaper to source, and more portable, but take longer to sterilise and fill. I use a secone bottling bucket with a little bottler, and a syringe to inject bleach for sterilising.

Mogwyth, that is seriously impressive that stash of HB.
I only bottle my booze. It is a pain to have to clean them all etc.
But its so handy when you've got the process completed to simply grab a beer, put it in the fridge, and crack it open whenever it suits.

mog thats a lovely sight.
and youre right about having a bigger choice to hand.
ive got 2 wherrys, a stout, a bitter, and 4 lagers to choose from at the minute.
can you imagine the cost of maintaining that lot in barrels?

Re: Bottles or kegs?
I use kegs. Simply because I prefer my beer from a keg. I find bottles a little too 'sharp and gassy' for me.
And that's what it's all about, at the end of the day. Isn't it? What ever ye prefer to put down ye own neck.
I don't subscribe to this 'Easier to take round ye mates place' idea either. I have a gallon mineral water flaggon here. I want to take? I fill that and bring it with me. It's not a problem. Sure, it takes a bit of time to fill it ~ what with waiting for the head to subside. But, that's no where near as time consuming as faffing about with hundreds of bottles.
Each to his own though. Own tastes, that is

Cheers Guys. Just added another 20 pints, 10 each of raspberry and strawberry in 1/2 pint bottles
Another advantage to bottling and having a good stock is you are guaranteed that at least some should last long enough to reach maturity

Re: Bottles or kegs?
Is getting smaller kegs (2 Gallon) and doing half and half just a stupid idea?

Not a " Stupid " idea, Mumbler. But a lot of work! If that way inclined, what I'd do is simply get Two kits. Keg one and bottle one. Much the same work involved. Double the pay back!
