first brew of the year - crash at first hurdle

Post by wetdog » Mon May 18, 2009 11:47 pm

I moved house recently so I haven't brewed anything since Christmas time.
I decided tomorrow was the day so I got all my gear out of the garage tonight ready.... and that's when I saw it. my copper chiller, hop strainer and MT manifold were all covered in green copper crud
spent 2 hours scrubbing it off but the hop strainer is too long to get into so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to go out and get a bottle brush. I know I've got one somewhere but you know what its like moving house - things hide from you
still, a lesson has been learned...

Try this method of removing verdigris:

Pour about three teaspoons of salt onto your work surface. Dip a lemon half into the salt, being sure that the salt covers the exposed pulp of the lemon.

Use the salt on the lemon to scrub the affected surface. The salt acts as a light abrasive and solvent while the lemon provides the acid necessary to remove the verdigris. Repeat the process with lemons and salt until all of the verdigris is gone.

Rinse with warm water and dry immediately.

Will a soaking in distilled vinegar do it?

I scrubbed the parts with a scourer first, then a brillo pad but there was still loads left, especially inside the tubes so in the end I boiled them in water with citric acid. they came up like new
serves me right though for storing them damp
