Milestone IPA - 6 weeks kegged, still cloudy
Milestone IPA - 6 weeks kegged, still cloudy
Any thoughts on what I should do with my Milestone IPA, it's been kegged since the end of March and still hasn't cleared. It had a week in the house, built up to pressure nicely, then has been in the cool of our garage ever since.
It tastes OK, in the samples I've drawn off - even drew off a pint last night to check it isn't just sediment in the tap, but that was cloudy too.
(Should probably try the Black Pearl sat in the keg next to it which was done at about the same time, but not sure I'll get a good feel for the cloudiness!)
I have a fridge in the garage I could whack it into for a few days but would need to be worth the faff of moving the various mousetraps, bikes etc stacked in front of it, and no good if all I'm doing is stirring up whatever has settled out.
Any thoughts?
David

Re: Milestone IPA - 6 weeks kegged, still cloudy
For an a ale you need a conditioning temperature between 10-15C.
Maybe your garage is too cool and this has caused your beer to be hazy. I wouldn't consider putting it in the fridge.

Did you check the f.g before you kegged ? if it was a stuck fermentation [above 1.020 ]that could cause it not to clear.

Not sure, the Wherry I've had in there has cleared nicely, so suspect it isn't the temperature.Maybe your garage is too cool and this has caused your beer to be hazy. I wouldn't consider putting it in the fridge.

Hydrometer, hmm, got one now - don't suppose that helps much really?

Is this going to take years then?
Looks like my carefree, don't worry too much about the detai approach to brewing might need a bit of updating

Re: Milestone IPA - 6 weeks kegged, still cloudy
My general unwillingness to throw anything away has at least come in useful.
A strategically "stored" LCD strip type thermometer that came free with the kids' bedding has confirmed that the garage seems to be 15C at about 7 in the evening. So my estimate (taking into account the direction of the sun etc) is that the garage is generally in the 10-15C area. One possible cause downgraded.
On the issue of a stuck kit - is there any point trying to get a FG now to see if this is the issue? Shaken presumably otherwise I'll get bubbles throwing my readings way out.
If it is, then any thoughts on what I do to clear it/finish it off?
(As an aside, cracked open the Black Pearl last night, marvellous tasting and so dark that clearing is academic and unknown. A bit lively though, think the pressure release needs checking!)

Re: Milestone IPA - 6 weeks kegged, still cloudy
My brother did a Milestone IPA and that turned out cloudy although it tasted OK, I've done numerous Milestone Olde Home Wrecker and Black Pearl and they have turned out clear and are probably my two favourite brews at the moment.
I wonder if it is a trend with the IPA?

Re: Milestone IPA - 6 weeks kegged, still cloudy
Best suggestion is to drink out of a pewter mug and then you won't worry whether it's cloudy or not.

Re: Milestone IPA - 6 weeks kegged, still cloudy
Dont think there's much you can do at this stage apart from wait and hope.
.If it tastes ok you could try mix it with a stout and make a black and tan.Always check the f.g before bottle/barrel especially the two can muntons kits
.They are well known for giving trouble. At least if you find out at the early stage you have a chance to do something to bring the gravity down.

Re: Milestone IPA - 6 weeks kegged, still cloudy
i've just done the milestone ipa (we are talking the 2 can kit in the dark cardboard box right?) and i bottled and primes and it had cleared prior to be carbonated. quite nice too. anyways if we are talking he same beer then leave a little longer and see what happens. if its still cloudy but tastes good then bloody drink it!!! my first brew (wherry) never got the slightest chance to clear but i had many a good night on it. at the end of the day should a pint look good or taste good?? happy drinking
Re: Milestone IPA - 6 weeks kegged, still cloudy
Thanks - sounds like it's just sup away then. It tastes good, so I'll not worry about the cloudiness.
... and I'll make sure my FG is looking sensible before kegging.
I hadn't appreciated that kits could stick until reading on here (or that Muntons would be so prone).
Thanks,
David
