AG No 1 Gob Hoblin (With Pics)

Post by DC » Sun May 24, 2009 6:50 am

Hi all, Today is my 1st AG brew with my newly constructed brewery setup  (popped my AG Cherry) I am brewing the Gob Hoblin from (http://www.barleybottom.com/menu/product/&ID=183), I thought I would post a few pics whilst the mash is on the go. I managed to hit 66.8 on the mash temprature which I was pleased with. I will continue to update this thread as the brewday progress's.

Update:
Just checked the mash temprature at half way and only lost 00.1 started at 66.8 and at half way was 66.7, so my coolbox mashtun has been a great success :D

2nd update:

Did the 1st batch sparge with no problems, but half way through sparge 2 the flow stopped and I had too stir the grist and then allow it to settle again. Stopped taking runnings at about 31L and checked the gravity and it was 1000  so I was panicking thinking I had sparge too much. But after the wort cooled for a while it read 1010. The boil is now on with the 1st addition of Fuggles.

3rd update:

Well thats it my 1st AG finished and it only took me 7 hours from start to finish including cleaning up  It was not as half as bad as I thought it was going to be :D and I think the hardest part was the cleaning up at the end :x Managed to collect bang on 23 litres in the FV and its now sleeping soundly in the spare room. I would like to say a BIG THANKYOU to everyone who has helped me on my pursuit of my 1st AG Brew, I will keep you guys posted on how it turns out.

Good pics there DC, congrats on your first AG

Nice to see those Brewmaker buckets kicking around, I have one also, it's been a few years since they made them.

Great stuff DC - looks like your kit is getting a proper christening!

Hi all, thanks for the comments and the encouragment  I woke this morning and thought must check too see how the brew was doing and it had already lifted the lid on the FV and made a bid for freedom  during the night. But the fermenting seems to have calmed a bit now

A nice head

Well done. 7 hours, that was unthinkable for my early attempts. I can remember one occasion where I was trying all sorts to get it cool enough to pitch the yeast the next morning before going to work. I'd be happy now with seven hours, my last brew was the first ever started in the afternoon.
Once you've tasted the results there will be only one way to go. Fine pictures too.

Hi all, Just thought I would post a quick update to let you know how my Gob Hoblin is coming along :D just checked the gravity tonight and its dropped from its OG 1042 down to 1004 since sunday when I pitched the yeast  its been going like the clappers  there are still some nice big clumps of what I am assuming is yeast floating to the top of the brew then sinking down again :!: if it continues at this rate it should be finished fermenting by the weekend

PS ! The smell from the FV is bloody fantastic :D I could just drink it from the FV with a straw it smells that good !
