Argh - beer all over the floor :o(

Post by Nuggs » Mon May 25, 2009 10:02 am

After two days in the PB, some of my beer has decided to escape via the tap seal. I reckon only about 2 pints have gone, but it's still a PITA.

I've not used the PB before, but the instructions said not to tighten the tap so much that it pinches the O-ring. Sod that, I've now tightened it up as much as I can!

I put Vaseline on the threads and around the O-ring and it's now a lot tighter than it was. Is there anything else I can do to stop the leak?

Is it a King Keg? I had a similar problem with a new King Keg. On inspection there was a small piece of plastic swarf attached to the barrel where the the tap seal sits. No amount of tightening would stop the leak. Solution was to remove the offending swarf with a scalpel blade. I hope this helps.

I'd add to Suttonbrewer's advice. Check all mating surfaces with a magnifying glass. Also, I had a cheap tap on a fermenter that had an uneven seam that needed "scalpling" off due to the tap being constructed from two moulded halves.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

I'm with the previous 2 posts. Be a little careful (as per the instructions) about over tightening. You wont want to deform an 'o' ring or any type of seal. The general rule is starl "loose" and get gentley tighter. When its empty, give it a whirl with just water in it, so as not to waste any precious grog!!

All these beer kegs seem to be assembled by monkeys. All taps, pressure valves, nuts, cap seals etc. need to be thoroughly checked before you first use them.

Thanks guys. I've given it a tighten (difficult to check the thread etc when it's full of beer!) and all seems okay.

Quite a shock opening up the garage to find precious beer over the floor though!
