The temperature in my keeping cellar is around 16C +/- 1 degree. Could someone please let me know if this is ok for conditioning and/or storage of bitter, I.P.A and lager? If not, what should the ideal temperature be for each?
Thanks!
Conditioning/storage temperature
Re: Conditioning/storage temperature
Pub cellars have a temperature range 10-14C for ales.
Re: Conditioning/storage temperature
You'll often hear the "ideal cellar temperature" quoted as being 12ºC or thereabouts.
Unfortunately, for the majority of us HBers, we usually have to put up with a cellar temperature that is non-ideal, all of seasonally, day/night and weather-dependant, and over which we don't have any real control.
It's common for commercial outlets to have air-conditioning installed in the cellar to control the termerature; and of course 'traditional' pub cellars are in the basement, where the temperature is generally lower and less variable.
But unless you've got a spare aircon unit kicking around, what are you going to do about it - apart from simply using the coolest place that you've got?
I have heard of some particularly keen people using an old fridge with the shelves taken out to accommodate a keg - this'd be particularly suitable for the lager.
I wouldn't have thought 16ºC was too tragic. And if your beer "escapes" from the cellar as quickly as mine
it'll not be sat in there long enough for a few degrees to make any real difference!
As I hinted: the vast majority of folk just use the coolest place that they have available to them.

Re: Conditioning/storage temperature
Thanks guys. Now, let's see if I can get the old air cooler to drop the temp by a couple of degrees C.
