Just a quick question - are you reading the hydrometer correctly? The OG from the picture looks a lot higher than 1042 - more like 1046 or so at a guess? Just asking 'cos 1004 seems quite low - 1008 would be more in the ball park I would have expected?

Anyhow, good job on your first AG - you'll love the results!

Hi Coatesg, I have just looked at my hydrometer and the other photos I took from the brewday and it does look like OG 1042  but I may have miss read it  with being so excited on my 1st AG brewday :D I am not going to worry too much about it, just waiting to taste the result.

It's very rare for beer to come down as far as 1.004 and not necessarily desirable either. I would check that hydrometer in plain tap water (should read 1.000 @ 20c) and determine whether there's a fault with the hydrometer or it's possibly being misread.

It's been sweltering up here in the Toon as well DC.

There's a chance your brew could have been warmer, but still at 24degC 1.004 is only corrected to 1.005

Whereabouts in Town are you?

Hi all, Just another quick update on my 1st AG brew, just syphoned off 8 bottles and put the rest into the 2nd FV and added finnings only got a total of 21L out of the 23L after some escaped during the initail fermentation and after scooping some of the foam off the head. And also the was quite a bit of trub in the bottom of the FV :(

Is there a further tubing extension on the end of that tap ?

And did you do the bottles with that same setup?

Hi Parp, In answer to your 1st question, no there was no extension to the end of the tap and secondly yes I syphoned the bottles 1st then syphoned the rest into the 2nd FV. Just curious why you asked the 2 questions ?

It's just that it's at hellish risk of aeration.

The beer going into the secondary doesn't look like its bubbled up too much, did the bottles?

I use little bottler taps/coopers taps on my FV's now - i can either bottle from them or they'll take tubing suitable for racking to another vessel.

Hi all, I have just syphoned my Gob Hoblin clone into my Cornie tonight =P~ and I had a sneaky half whilst it was syphoning  (couldnt resist) and I have too say its tastes bloody fantastic =P~ =D> even though its flat it still tastes great  I did the old Oz Clark bit and swirled around my mouth for a bit (didnt spit it out tho) and it is really smooth with a lovely fruity taste and then there is a slight taste of hops that come through when you have swallowed it =P~ I am arranging a pool & darts night in my garage to celerbrate my 1st AG brew and invited the lads from work for the 1st tasting  I better get another brew on now as I dont think this one will last a fortnight =P~ I also bottled 9 bottles worth and tried one on Sunday gone and it didnt tase very good (very bitter) and not much fizz, but it had only been in the bottle since the previous Wednesday so I will have to leave it another week or so and sample another bottle. And I was surprised how clear it was

Nice & clear
