lager kit

Post by paulbrrtt » Mon Jun 08, 2009 9:08 am

Hi all Im quite new to brewing, at the moment I have a TC going and some neetle beer, The wife wants me to have a go at lager but the only ones I saw in my local wilkies was Coopers Australian so my question is, is it any good and also do you deviate away from the instructions at all ? there was also a packet of damm forgot the name of it but basically it was spray malt?. I have read on here the use of sparay malt quite often so would it be worth buying a packet? cheers in advance

The stuff you have seen in Wilkos is probably Beer Kit Enhancer, which is a mix of 50% spraymalt and 50% dextrose (brewing sugar).

The Coopers lager kits are very good. Personally, I would add 500g of dextrose (brewing sugar) and 500g of light spraymalt, or a 1kg bag of BKE. I would also normally add some hops for a bit of extra hop bite, but you will need to go to a homebrew supplier for these, and it is a bit of faffing about for a beginner. In any case, the Cooper's kits are still decent without. If you are interested in adapting the kit further, have a read of this thread...

You will need to bottle to get the necessary level of carbonation.

It's a lot better than just adding sugar.

Yes, the Coopers kits work well with BKE, I've done them like this myself. 8)
