FV Taps

Post by macca » Mon Jun 08, 2009 3:55 pm

I use the tap on my FV to draw off samples into a tube to take gravity readings, and wondered if this is bad practice from a santizing point of view. I wipe the tap down with a paper towel wetted with videne sol, but wondered if this is sufficient to prevent nasties building up inside the tap which could then transfer with the beer when i eventually run off into keg/bottle etc.
Just wondered what others did in this regard, to ensure cleanliness.

Cheers!

I should really give mine a quick wipe with a videne solution and perhaps use a cotton bid dipped in videne for the spout but I've taken samples and done nothing and not had a brew go bad yet.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. Its reassuring to know others have not encountered problems with this method of taking samples. I might try using a hand sprayer and spraying some videne sol up the tap after taking a sample, just to be thorough.

I used to use a turkey baster to take samples, even though I've always had taps on my fvs for that very reason

They are easy to sanitise and two squirts are enough to fill a trial jar

I use both the turkey baster method and the tap method. The Videne solution I always have a spray bottle just for those small wipe and spray jobs such as the FV Taps. I have had no issues that I know of yet with either solution.

I never put my trial jar samples back into the FV anyway, just normally taste them then fire them down the plug hole!

Oh No, it's always good practice to drink the sample after testing. never put it back in the fermenter, it's such bad form...WHAT! See link for details...lol
