Hi Guys

I am a keen fan of German Wheat Beer and wondered which make of kit you all prefer?

Cheers.

Hi Swiller. I bottled a Coopers Wheat about 10 days ago...........even though its meant to be a slightly cloudy beer, it's already clear! :? I know this doesnt answer your question, but I guess I will have a better idea in a couple of weeks!

This is a very good one.

http://www.brupaks.com/westridingwheat.htm

Brew it to around 5-5.5%, rather than the stated dillution. As the ones I did weaker didn't have a great balance. It could also do with not only using the hops tea bag supplied, but also a bit of saaz boiled in there too.

Also check that the yeast used is a wheat beer yeast. Some early ones had an ale yeast in, and it didn't work imo. The later ones came with a Breferm Blanche I think. (it was a while ago)

And also! If I remember correctly it says on the instructions dont bottle until under 1005! Hopefully they have changed them by now... But dont trust everything on the instructions, better to seek advice of the forum.

Great Kit, but Poor instructions.

I made the brewferm wheat beer about 4 monthes ago which is a very nice one. it's been stedily improving with age over the last couple of monthes though it's very hard to resist drinking it all now. I've heard it reaches it's peak at about 6 or 7 monthes.

My first wheat kit was a Coopers and it was awesome. I added a kilo of spraymalt and either 200 or 300 grams of light candi sugar ( must check notes ). I also boiled up some saaz hops and added to the fv. The candi sugar gave it a higher abv with only brewing to 20.5 litres and also gave a touch of "Belgian " flavour, if you like Belgian beers you`ll know what I mean.
You definitely need a wheat yeast though and the WB-06 I used brewed at around a steady 18C worked a treat. Its the only kit you can be drinking after a week or so conditioning, wheats are fine drunk young.

Thanks jayBee I will definately take your advice and try the Coopers kit... Did you use wheat spray malt?

It'll still drop clear like any beer, you have to decant off so much, then leave about an inch of beer in the bottle, swirl that around to loosen the yeast, then pour off the rest, hey presto, wheat beer!
I also find wheat beers are far superior young, i find they loose their zestyness after a while. 10 days after bottling, half my stash of wheat beer is gone

I used 500 gms wheat spray and 500gms light spray, it still has that wheat taste. I reckon its the yeast that makes the difference.

Thanks again JayBee I will see if my local HB shop stocks the yeast I am sure they do and I agree yeast has an important contribution to the finished taste. By the way let me know how you get on with the Black Rock cider I tried one a few weeks ago and it turned out flat as a witches dunno what went wrong I did everything to the book.

Cheers mate. :)

I also love wheat beer. I'm going to brew a batch of Munton's today. The vat is currently soaking in bleach and brine, so will get started in about an hour.

I'm going to use 500g Amber Spray Malt, 250g MaltoDextrose (kit enhancer), 300g candy sugar (much better than white sugar, I now also use this for priming) and a teaspoon of yeast enhancer.
