Pale Malt only

Post by spencerwood » Fri Jun 19, 2009 1:01 pm

Hi,

I'm planning an American Pale Ale. Based on pale malt and cascade hops. To keep the colour light, I was going to use just pale malt and perhaps some torrified wheat at < 5%. I might keep the quantity quite high, around 5-6Kg for a 23litre brew to have aroud 6% alcohol.

I was just wondering if anyone had tried such a simpe recipe with only 1 grain type?

Cheers

Spencer

Hi.
I just brewed the very same...
Maris Otter
A handfull of Torrified
A bag of Cascades...

Will be around 6 percent and its conditioning in the cornie now...

Go for it.

Just got it from another forum i posted in:

4.7kg M.O.
250g Crystal
200g Torrified Wheat

67 for 90 mins

25g Amarillo - 60
25g Cascade - 60
25g Cascade - 15
25g Cascade - 0

Just leave out the crystal and change the Amarillo to Cascades?
:D

Thanks for the details.

I've just popped all that into Beer Engine. It gives it a bitterness rating of 45 and around 5%. Thats quite bitter - is that typical of an American Pale Ale?

My wife really likes them for some reason - every time there is a beer festival on at our local Wetherspoon, she scans the pumps looking for an APA after there was a 6% one on last year. In brewing such a beer, I am hoping to get "the permission" to make a Sarah Hughes Ruby Mild next time :D

APAs normally have a decent, noticeable bitterness, but the overall impression is balanced with the malt.

I've made a good few single malt beers, I tend to throw a few percent of something extra just for interest, wheat, munich, pale crystal etc.

There's loads of 'standard' pales out there that just use 100% pale malt - mines just that and goldings. not very exciting, but a good 'quaffer' - and I learnt how to AG brew with it, too. So it holds a special place in my heart!! :D
