I can't say for certain but I get a strong coffee note in this beer so I'd suggest finding a good ESB recipe and add pale chocolate or chocolate, or perhaps up the amounts if they are there already to get that aspect.
I'd also suggest some dark crystal as I think there's some of a flavour that might come from that in there too...

No idea on the hops or yeast.
Come to think of it, I think this beer might be in the 300 beer to try before you die book by Roger Protz so If I remember I'll look it up, or you might be able to find some info around the place...

I was drinking it on draft in the lakes a couple of weeks ago. It had a nice Barley Sugar tast to it.

I've been toying with a recipe for a bit, but haven't ever finalized anything. I was thinking of mashing high to get some of that sweetness. It also seems like there's a touch of chocolate malt, despite what Protz says.

I had a pint a few weeks ago in the lakes and in the next pub a pint of Hobgobblin and they were not that diffrent. Both had a strong Toffee flavour.

For a starter I would guess quite a bit of Crystal and some Choc malt and hopped with Challenger. I doubt its a complex recipe.

They like to use Challenger/Goldings and Styrian in their beers but thats all i can offer on hops.

I know when i tried it i didn`t like it,it was too burnt tasting for me so i`m guessing either Amber and or Black Malt,
probably Crystal if you can taste toffee, but i didn`t get a Chocolate taste when i tried it but thats not to say there isnt
any chocolate Malt in it.

GeordieBrewer's got a nice looking recipe in the All-grain forum. He never posted about his results of his second try.

I used to live down the road from jennings brewery and sneck lifter is still one of my top 3. I'd really like to clone it. Has anyone come close? I just saw this, they are talking about the bitter but it does go with what haz66 wrote.
Jeremy Pettman and, his deputy head brewer Rebecca Adams believe in using the finest raw materials for their beers. Maris Otter is their choice of malting barley and the blend of grain for the first batch of Bitter was pale, amber, crystal and chocolate malts: it's an unusually dark version of Bitter, one that has been satisfying Cumbrian drinkers for close on two centuries. The hops are all English whole flowers: Challenger, Fuggles and Goldings. There are three additions in the copper.
