Found this recipe: http://www.celtnet.org.uk/recipes/brewi ... eather-ale

Reckon it could be simplified though.

Most new age aromatherapy type hippie herbalist places do them, search on E-Bay and you will find a few dried. However if you can pick fresh, I would do so.

We are also discussing nettle beers and I have just done a Gruit ale with heather used as an aroma herb for the last 5min of the boil. An interesting book which I have just purchased and that I took some inspiration from was Stephen Harrod Buhner's "Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers" which I am currently reading. get through the dross and there are some gems of knowledge in there.

Gruit Ale

Stinger Beer

Cheers

This was brilliant, The only downer is it reminds me of not being able to find a supply of Bog Myrtle. Ordered my foraging book and know there is a goodly clump somewhere in Wicken Fen down the road from me once I know what i'm looking for.

Anyone know an online supplier?

Bruce Williams in the video is an inspirational figure in Scottish microbrewing. His brewery is the commercial producer of heather ale (and their 'normal' beers aren't half bad either), and can still now and again be found manning the homebrew shop his dad founded in Glasgow!

Man, you should be out in The Highlands picking yourself some free heather! I'm going to do it in Ireland over the summer.

You don't buy these plants there is an abundance on any moor Bog Myrtle is a little green bush that grows beside heather you can smell it about 20 feet away before you reach it.It has a very strong medicine flavour so be careful & don't use much. :D

Not much heather round my way, but aye it's not far away! I always like the notion of wild food but have never done it. Feasting on signal crayfish and drinking heather beer sounds a good plan once the petrol runs out.

Just managed to get a hold of a bottle of "Froach" Heather Ale and will be doing a taste test to see if I like it and can do something similar. Will post my observations.

Cheers

Do let us know what you think. It might be something of an acquired taste but after that the pints just seem to disappear somehow ...
