dead beer???

Post by moobli » Sat Jul 04, 2009 9:44 am

did the lager kit that came with the wilkos youngs starter kit
got a good ferment going nice bubbly head
which died down after 4 days in a room at 22%
left it and got two readings the same after another 24 hours
sterlised all the kit (pressure keg)
and gave it a good rinse
disolved 90gm of tate and lyle white suger into a cup of water
and put it into pressure keg
started the syphon with clean water cooled boiled in seperate beaker
then in to keg monday am
let it drop smoothly with out splashing at all
good seal on keg as far as i could tell lubed ok

34 hours later the level had dropped in the keg by about 1cm
tried a glassful last night friday
no bubblys no pressure it glugged out under protest
cloudy and not tasteing that nice
had constant 22% for 5 days and was looking for somewhere to cool it

what went wrong
can i save the beer? put it back in fv with more yeast and try a second ferment
was it the liquid sugar
can i add more sugar
or throw it away and try another kit

cheers chris

im planning to go to a hbs today
so ill have a look at co2 kits and start to chase up these pubs that have promised me bootles and crates
only thing i can think is the top seal on the keg isnt up to the job
new one from wilkos it was with its first brew in it
new kit needed
shame

just been reviewing what i did
i followed the recipe until it came to the 1kg sugar which i swapped for 1kg dme
but as i say i got a good yeast action going
just had a look at wilkos for the co2 injection kit and 10 bulbs just under £20

this was a youngs lager kit
tend to stay away from bitters as they give me really bad hangovers

used to drink boddies down south suffered with boddies bum

but i liked the tribute in looe

might have to try some of the pale ales

not a guiness drinker altho i did like the guiness red
any recomends on kits

hi
brewing lagers, i'd go for bottling rather than kegging .bottles keep the pressure better. if you want to keep it cheap use 2l pop bottles

cheers easty
was promised a load of magners bottles and three crates
but they havent appeared yet and as they are freebies i dont like to pester them too much
and we dont drink pop

went to a hbs shop not too bad
bit league of gentlemen (local shop, for local people)
but nice enough bloke
picked up two nottingham yeasts 11.5g and a coopers austrailian ale kit all for a £10

so gonna try a quick rescue of this lager then make up the coopers and chase up the bottles
get this lot bottled

I've never had much success with barrels.

Check the o ring, if you tighten it too much it becomes all warped and squashed and pressure escapes.

The coopers pale ale kit, for me, is excellent but use the beer enhancer recommended on the tin and bottle it at the end.

Get yourself a capper (about £10) and some caps (100 for about £1).

You can't go wrong.
