Hi All I've Black Pearl on Brew at the moment
I have read on here that it's like Old peculiar .I want to get something that is like Guinness or Murphy's .
I like old speckled hen too so what's the best for that sort of brew.
taste questions
Re: taste questions
I would have thought that being a Stout Black Pearl would be more like a Guiness.
Old Perculiar - try a Woodforde's Nog
Guiness - try typing 'Ditch's Stout' into the search and see what you find
Old Speckled Hen - difficult one really Woodforde's Wherry does n't have enough hop or flavour I think BUT iam told that Cooper's Real Ale is not too far off. If you can get your hands on a can why not try Coopers English Bitter.

Re: taste questions
The closest i've had to Old Speckled Hen was Muntons Smuggler. But the Smugglers was also very similar to Colne Valley Bitter. The Coopers Bitter is nothing like it. I've not tried the Coopers English Bitter or Real Ale. So maybe they would.
I'd go with Coopers Stout. The Nog and the Smugglers.
When Old Speckled Badger comes along maybe he'd give an opinion.

Re: taste questions
If you want something similar to Old Speckled hen then why not try a few extract brews? Get the GW book which has an Old Speckled Hen recipe that can be made using extract and give it a go

Re: taste questions
Never having tried any of those kits, I can't offer any opinion. And sadly they've been messing about with the recipe for OSH so, to me, it doesn't taste like it used to.Normski wrote:When Old Speckled Badger comes along maybe he'd give an opinion.

Coopers Stout, to me, is a cross between Murphy's and Guniness.
