Woodforde Wherry 3kg Kit
Woodforde Wherry 3kg Kit
Just bought the Woodforde Wherry 3kg kit........This is my first 3kg kit so i am not sure whether i need to put two packets of yeast in it, or whether i have one extra packet in the box by mistake??

Re: Woodforde Wherry 3kg Kit
Hi,
I've went for a Wherry kit as my first brew, which is currently conditioning. I only got one packet of yeast with my kit. I think its only supposed to come with one, but others can confirm.
After reading various threads on this forum I didn't use the yeast that came with the kit, but purchased some Safale S-04, which seemed to be the one people recommended. I used two packets of S-04 (11.5 gram per packet). This resulted in a fast and successful ferment (2 days to get down to FG of 1012). I left it for a total of 7 days, then transferred it to a second fermenting vessle for another 6 days (to settle out more yeast), then bottled it. Brew is looking good so now just trying to resist the urge to drink it; want to leave it at least 2 weeks to condition.

Yes, you have. Save it and use it if you have a kit with a dud yeast.brewbie wrote:..... or whether i have one extra packet in the box by mistake??
Re: Woodforde Wherry 3kg Kit
I'd put them both in, I'm sure they are only 6g packets, so 12g will be the same weight as a packet of S-04.
Re: Woodforde Wherry 3kg Kit
Brewbie, I just opened my brand new 3kg box of woodfordes wherry for you. the single packet of unopened yeast weighs 4g.
Hope this helps.

Just done the wherry, used the s04, and saved the 4g one to use on me TC's, I have been given some bread yeast, so will use that for the Tc's too!!!

The kit comes with one packet of yeast. I didn't make a note of the weight. A typical yeast like s-04 is around 11g. I have only done one of the Wherry kits. I used the kit yeast. Don't expect the gravity to get much lower than 1014 (if you're lucky) mine was 1016. It's a nice brew, quite a bitter flavour and improves with age give it at least 3 weeks in the bottle (if you can resist)

All the yeast that I've had with Munton's produced kits have 6G stamped on the foil packet.Brupert wrote:Brewbie, I just opened my brand new 3kg box of woodfordes wherry for you. the single packet of unopened yeast weighs 4g.
Re: Woodforde Wherry 3kg Kit
So does mine, but it weighs 4g on my scales, maybe they're knackered
Re: Woodforde Wherry 3kg Kit
I suspect the latter. Muntons would be in the do-do with trading standards if it was less than 6 grams.Brupert wrote:So does mine, but it weighs 4g on my scales, maybe they're knackered
Re: Woodforde Wherry 3kg Kit
I only tried a few kit's (hark at me ive not done an all grain yet) but this was one of the best IMO, i did it a couple of times. The last time i did it i used asda still water to remove the chlorine factor, sure you could do with camden tablet though.
I thought it had a bit of a twang but a great pint all the same.

Better get mine on now then

Re: Woodforde Wherry 3kg Kit
Yeah, go on get it brewed, it’ll be fine. I've just done 3 Wherry's in a row. And used the supplied 6g yeast. All have fermented OK. 1st two down to 1013. 3rd bubbling away nicely after about 6 hours.
